Heat and Heat Technology
2
Temperature …is the measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object. - the faster the particles, the more kinetic energy. Thermometer is a tool to measure transfer of Kinetic energy.
3
Heat …Is the transfer of energy between objects that are different temperatures. …Is ALWAYS transferred from areas of high temp. to area of low temp. Soda can from fridge in your hand. (Energy goes from your hand to can.) Feels cool Cup of hot tea in your hand. )Energy goes from cup to your hand.) Feels hot`

5
Heat travels How does the energy move from a hotter to a colder object? Three mechanisms Conduction Convection Radiation
7
Specific Heat …is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of water 1ºC. (We call this a calorie.)
9
Thermal Energy … is the total energy of the particles in a substance. Measured in Joules (J). Depends on: Temperature of substance How much of the substance you have Rules to calculate Heat: 1. Write down what you know 2. Substitute the values into the equation 3. Solve and cancel units
10
Problem How much energy would be transferred if 50 kg of gold cools from 50 C to 20 C ? Mass of Gold = 50 kg Temp before = 50 C Temp after = 20 C Specific heat capacity of gold = 129 J/kg. C Solve: 129 J/kg. C x 50 kg x (-30C) =-193,500J
