Rock climbing is becoming a very popular sport in many countries. There are many kinds of rock climbing
3
Even beginners can do some climbing, but free climbing is only for experts. Free climbing is the most dangerous kind of rock climbing because there are no second chances.
4
Usually, your rope will catch you if you fall while you are climbing. However, you have no ropes or safety equipment in free climbing.
5
In most countries, young criminals do not go to jail. Instead, they go to reform schools. The goal of reform schools is to teach these young people to be better people and to follow the rules of their community.
6
They have guards and walls, but the conditions are much better than in a real life.
7
A Battle in the Wild Hyenas are the natural enemies of lions. Hyenas and lions must compete for food. Considering that they are bigger and stronger, you might think that a lion would easily beat a hyena, but it is not that simple. Male lions live alone, but hyenas are pack animals.
8
They hunt and fight in teams and therefore have the advantage of numbers. Hyenas are also very clever. They often wait for a lion to kill a animal, and then steal the animal from the lion.
9
While the lion is fighting some of the hyenas, the others steal the food.
10
Hunting for Stars Record companies are always looking for the next superstar, but finding the next Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake is not easy. Record companies hire head-hunters to find new musicians for them.
11
Head-hunters travel around the world looking for new singers. They go to singing contests and small, local concerts.
12
When they find someone with talent, they bring that person to the record company. The record company gives them singing and dance lessons to prepare them to be superstars.
13
Of course, not all of these young singers become superstars. Still, it is the job of a head-hunter to find the one singer who will.
14
The Wish-Makers There are many children around the world with terminal illnesses. For these children, time is short. The Make-A-Wish foundation tries to help these children by making their last wishes possible.
15
Some children may want to visit a special place or meet a famous person. The Make-A-Wish foundation started with one little boy, Chris Grecius. Chris dreamed of being a police officer, but he was very sick.
16
Before he died, the Arizona police department and many other people worked hard to grant him his wish. They made him an honorary police officer and made a special uniform for him.
17
Chris died shortly after that, but not before he got his greatest wish.
18
Keeping the City Green and Clean How many trees are there in your neighborhood? In some cities, there are almost no trees. This is a big problem.
19
Not only does it make the city less beautiful, but it also makes the air worse. We need trees because they produce oxygen. Cities with too few trees have very bad air.
20
To fix this problem, many cities are now making green zones. The green zones are like giant parks. No new roads or buildings can be built in them.
21
Usually the green zones are just outside of the city. This causes another problem; cities need room to grow, but they cannot spread into the green zones.
22
Finding the correct balance between allowing a city to grow and keeping enough trees is very difficult.
23
Chapter two Earthquake are always dangerous, but they can be very dangerous when they happen under the sea. When an earthquake happens under the sea, it can make giant waves, or tsunamis.
24
The waves in a tsunami can be very high, sometimes up to 30 meters. When a tsunami hits land, it causes lots of damage. The water destroys trees, buildings, and anything else in its way.
25
Do you know what day March 21 st is? It’s Earth Day! Earth Day was started by John McConnell in 1970 as a way to bring people’s attention to the problems of the environment.
26
Earth Day started in San Francisco, but now countries all over the world celebrate Earth Day.
27
Most people around the world live modern lives. They drive cars and work in offices. Their lives are very different from the lives of their ancestors.
28
But some people do not live modern lives. They live like their ancestors because they want to keep their culture and way of life. The Inuit are a good example of this.
29
The Inuit live in the most northern parts of Canada and in parts of Greenland. Most Inuit live in small communities and make their living by hunting and fishing.
30
The Aborigines of Australia are another example. The Aborigines live much like their ancestors did thousands of years ago. They live in the same kinds of homes and hunt in the same ways.
31
However, the ways of life of both the Inuit and Aborigines no longer want to live in the traditional way. When the younger people leave for modern cities, there is no one to continue the traditional way of life.
32
Pollution also damages the way of life of these people. Most traditional peoples make their living by hunting, and pollution makes it hard for them to catch enough animals for food.
33
It is very sad, but in a few years, there may be no traditional cultures left in the world.
34
Honeybees are very useful insects. They make honey, and they help plants grow by spreading pollen. However, not all bees are so helpful. In fact, some bees are very dangerous. Killer bees live in South America and in southern parts of the United States.
35
They are a new kind of bee. In the 1950s, scientists were trying to make bees make more honey. They mixed normal honeybees with African honeybees. However, the new bee was very dangerous.
36
It got angry very easily and attacked in groups. These killer bees are no more poisonous than regular bees, but because they attack in larger groups, they can easily kill a person.
37
Killer bees cause many problems besides stinging people. The biggest problem is that they are not good for honey companies. Killer bees make much less honey than normal bees, and they are much harder to work with.
38
As killer bees move into new areas, they can destroy the honey business in that area. Also, killer bees do not spread as much pollen as normal bees. So they are bad for farmers as well.
