Getting To Know The TARHEEL STATE NORTH CAROLINA’S NICKNAME is “THE TAR-HEEL STATE” Some say the NICKNAME comes from the fact that one of NC’s most important exports in the colonial days was TAR or TURPENTINE taken from PINE TREES, while others hold that the NICKNAME comes from the CIVIL WAR when NORTH CAROLINA’s soldiers wouldn’t run from a fight, but stood their ground like they had TAR on their heels, sticking them in place.
