School Update A big thank you for your patience. New toilet blocks. Junior hall repairs. Year 3 and 5 temporary accommodation. Year One outside area.

Class Routines Drop off On a wet day please drop off your child at the 1T door from 8.45am. At all other times children will line up on the Infant playground. The whistle will be blown at 8.55am and the children will be collected from the playground by their class teacher. If you arrive at school after 9am then please report to the school office.This is in line with the school safeguarding policy. Collection 1T collected from their classroom door 1A from hall door. Physical Education PE day is Wednesday(Sports Coaches) so children will need to have full kits. Class rules In Year One we try hard to follow our golden rules: Our Golden Rules Do be gentle, don’t hurt anyone. Do be kind and helpful, don’t hurt people’s feelings. Do look after property, don’t waste or damage things. Do listen to people, don’t interrupt. Do be honest, don’t cover up the truth. Do work hard, don’t waste time.

Homework Reading for at least 10 minutes every night. Key words and Phonic word strips – Each child has will have individual words to practise for reading. Please do this as part of your reading session each night. Homework books – Given out on Wednesday, returned by Monday. This will be an activity to reinforce maths, literacy or topic work. Spellings – Weekly to support work in phonics sessions. – Termly key word spellings

Reading At home Please bring book bags daily. Please sign the reading diary and write pages read. Question your child about what they have read. Reading bands. At bedtime read favourite books from home or the library. In school Your child will be heard read once every week by the class teacher and once a week by a teaching assistant. (Individual up to Christmas then guided sessions begin) Reading big books as part of English sessions. Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) Reading is also a large component of our phonics sessions. Reading Book Lists Books suitable for each year group.

Recap on the story – expect recall of more detail. What can we remember about the book? Who are the characters? Talk about what happens at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the story. Sequence events together. Have they included each element in the sequence? Encourage your child to ask their own questions about the book. Give praise for your child’s efforts

Writing Targets for the end of Year One: To know a sentence. To hold a sentence in their head long enough to write it. (Think it, say it, write it, read it). Has to make sense. Needs a capital letter and full stop. Has finger spaces between each word. To include adjectives in their writing. To form letters correctly – sheet available. Cursive Handwriting
