2 Why Study The Arts Studies have shown that study in the Arts strengthens academic performance—for example, Music assists with word decoding and phonological skills Dance improves visual-spatial skills as well as the physical benefits Drama education strengthens verbal skills and social skills Visual Art allows students to explore and build upon their imagination, broaden their perspective and helps with critical thinking

3 Year 10 The Arts Dance Drama Media Music Visual Art

4 The Arts Year 10 Electives Dance This subject acknowledges the relationship between practical and theoretical aspects of dance – the making and performing of movement and appreciation of its meaning.

5 The Arts Drama An exciting and invigorating subject packed with variety, excitement, focus and discipline with a balance of Practical and Theory. Provides a solid foundation for Year 11 Drama, which prepares students for either TAFE or university entry level.

6 The Arts Year 10 Media In Year 10, students explore and recognise a range of media concepts, creating a variety of media products. The Year 10 subject prepares students for either TAFE or university entry courses in Year 11, ensuring a solid foundation in practical and theoretical Media concepts.

7 The Arts Music Year 10 Music students will expand their practical music skills through rehearsal and performance. The subject will provide essential knowledge and skills for further study into Year 11 and Year 12.

8 The Arts Visual Arts The Year 10 subject builds on a basic platform from skills learnt in Year 9. Students are exposed to painting, ceramics, graphics, printmaking, drawing, sculpture, mixed media and theoretical concepts.

9 Technologies Computing To understand the fundamental principles of the nature of working with Digital Technologies. Design and Technology Students will develop skills working with various types of materials such as metals, plastic and wood. Students will also engage in Technical Graphics (manual and computer based).

10 Technologies Design & Engineering This subject facilitates an understanding of how design, systems and mechanisms work. Students develop a strong knowledge base of both Design and Engineering in one subject. Textiles, Children, Family and Community Design and make textile projects and explore the development of children and family.

11 Foods Food technology is a practical course covering preparation and cooking skills needed to design and prepare meals. Students will learn about nutrition and food commodities as well as the hospitality industry.

12 WACE Western Australian Certificate of Education Students will be required to sit and pass an online Literacy and Numeracy test to achieve a WACE Also required, either achieve an ATAR or complete a minimum of a Cert II in addition to meeting the general requirements for the certificate

13 Subjects in 2017 At LJBC, subjects in Lower and Upper (Year 10) Secondary are designed to prepare students for the new Australian Curriculum aligned suite of Year 11 and Year 12 courses for the WACE in 2016 Also remember, these selections are not a first come-first serve; when choosing your electives, be careful when choosing your second choices—you may be taking these subjects if your first choice does not make.
