Scientific Understanding Chapter 2
2
“Science never solves a problem without creating ten more.” George Bernard Shaw
3
2.1 Main Idea Scientific Investigations involve: – Observing – Collecting data – Inferring – Applying imagination – Drawing conclusions
4
2.1 Main Idea Continued Science is based on empirical evidence that is obtained through observation and well- reasoned interpretation of data. Pseudoscience is based on personal interpretation of data Science is based on objective analysis of experimental data
5
2.2 Main Idea Scientists use models to test their ideas about things that cannot be observed directly All systems have input, process and output Scientists build models to represent a process. They test how well the model matches the input and output in the natural world
6
An Everyday System In a bicycle pump, many parts work together as a system. Look at the pump and describe how you would complete the chart.
7
Feedback When you exercise, your body’s circulatory system feeds back information to your heart. What words belong in the blanks in the graphic organizer?
8
The Mercury Cycle Materials that contain the element mercury can be harmful to fish that eat them. On the diagram, what are the inputs, outputs, and processes of the system?
9
Food Webs Scientists use food webs to model how energy flows through a particular environment. In a food web, lines connect organisms that eat other organisms. Use the picture bank to describe what this food web would look like.
10
2.3 Main Idea A scientific theory is a well-tested explanation for a wide range of observations and experimental results As people learn more, theories evolve to explain new observations
11
2.4 Main Idea Understanding scientific research and thinking scientifically can help societies, groups and individuals make good decisions and solve problems in everyday life.
12
Costs and Benefits What is the cost and benefit of building offshore wind turbines?
13
Crocodile Nesting in Florida The graph shows the total number of American crocodile nests in Florida over time.
14
Tuberculosis Tuberculosis is a treatable and preventable disease. It attacks the lungs and can cause death. It affects poor countries more severely than it affects wealthy countries.
15
Seeing the Light Look at the timeline. Explain how each event is an example of economic, political, or social concerns.
