3
WHAT IS OPEN STACK? Open Source Cloud Computing Software Provides Businesses the ability to build cloud services in their own data center.
4
OPENSTACK HISTORY July 2010 Rackspace Hosting and NASA jointly launched an open-source cloud-software initiative known as OpenStack Managed by the OpenStack Foundation which was established in September 2012

OpenStack currently has eleven core components: Nova – Deploys and Manages large numbers of Virtual Machines Swift - provides a scalable storage system that supports object storage. Cinder - provides persistent block storage to guest VMs. Glance - provides a catalog and repository for virtual disk images, which enables faster deployment. Keystone - provides authentication and authorization for all the OpenStack services. Works as an active directory for services and systems. Horizon - provides a modular web-based user interface (UI) for OpenStack services. Neutron - provides network connectivity-as-a-service between interface devices managed by OpenStack services. Helps communication between OpenStack components. Ceilometer - provides a single point of contact for billing systems. Heat – Helps manage the infrastructure needed for a cloud service to run. Trove - provides database-as-a-service provisioning for relational and non-relational database engines. Sahara - provides data processing services for OpenStack-managed resources.

OPENSTACK STORAGE SERVICE: Built up of two components Cinder Block Storage Swift Object Storage
8
OPENSTACK OBJECT STORAGE “SWIFT” Object Storage rather than traditional file storage Each object contains Data Itself Metadata Global Identifier Faster than most storage systems Ring Zones for redundancy and resilience No guaranteed Consistency Scalable Designed to store large volumes of data Not suited for Virtual machines that require 100% Redundancy
9
OPENSTACK BLOCK STORAGE "CINDER" requirement for virtual infrastructures The block storage system manages the creation, attaching and detaching of the block devices to servers. Block storage volumes are fully integrated into OpenStack Compute and the Dashboard allowing for cloud users to manage their own storage needs. In addition to using simple Linux server storage, it has unified storage support for numerous storage platforms including Ceph, NetApp, Nexenta, SolidFire, and Zadara. Block storage is appropriate for performance sensitive scenarios such as database storage, expandable file systems, or providing a server with access to raw block level storage. Snapshot management provides powerful functionality for backing up data stored on block storage volumes. Snapshots can be restored or used to create a new block storage volume. suppliers like HP and IBM provide cinder block support

SOME FEATURES & BENEFITS Multi-dimensional scalability Linear Performance Backups Built in replication No central database Eliminates Bottlenecks Drive Auditing Detects drive failures Expiring objects Leverages Commodity Hardware No lock-in HDD/node failure agnostic Self Healing Unlimited storage Highly Scalable and Huge
