4. John 16:7-15 The promise of the Holy Spirit, and His office.

5. This is part of the Mystery Doctrine for the Church. It is called a mystery not because it is obscure but because nothing concerning the Church Age was revealed in OT times. Rom 16:5; 1 Cor 2:7; Eph 1:9; 3:3-9; Col 1:26-27; 2:2

6. The reason for the mystery: it was designed to keep Satan from being clued in on the Church Age until the intensification of that stage of the conflict would actually begin.

7. This is the fourth time our Lord spoke of the Holy Spirit in this discourse.

8. 1. John 14:16-17, Jesus will ask the Father to the send the “Helper”, the “Spirit of Truth”, who will indwell every believer of the Church Age.

9. 2. John14:26, the Helper is defined as our “teacher” of the mind of Christ: the Grace Apparatus for Perception, (GAP), who will “bring to our remembrance” all the Doctrine we have learned.

10. 3. John 15:26, the ministry of Common Grace defined: to make the gospel under- standable to all, and to empower us to deliver the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

11. 4. John 16:7-15 summarizes the reason for sending the Holy Spirit.

12. 4. John 16:7-15 summarizes the reason for sending the Holy Spirit. a. Vs. 7, “I will send Him to you”, which is to our advantage.

13. b. Vs. 8-11, The convicting ministry of the Spirit that is part of His common grace ministry.

14. c. Vs. 13-15, His teaching and guiding ministry, which ultimately glorifies Christ.

15. “But I tell (teach) you all the truth (Bible Doctrine).” He continues to teach them part of the Mystery Doctrines for the Church Age that pertains to the Holy Spirit.

16. Truth = ALETHEIA - “truth, truthfulness; reality.” This is all that Jesus is capable of telling / teaching them; absolute truth, which is Bible doctrine in categorical form.

17. Principles: 1. Even though Jesus is under great pressure He is not in any way under shock and can still communicate Bible doctrine effectively…

18. … because He has built capacity by building His own ECS through the consistent intake and application of God’s Word, while being filled with the Holy Spirit.

19. 2. Bible doctrine must displace mental attitude sins if you are to advance inside the Plan of God.

20. 3. This doctrine, and others, will not help unless there is a structure of doctrine in the soul (ECS), vs 12.

21. A temporary dash of doctrine when you need it is not going to cut it; you must over a period of time have taken in the doctrine to apply in times of crisis.

22. 4. When the crisis comes you have to have more than two hours of Bible class, and more than a couple of verses that you have memorized.

23. 5. Jesus Christ as the prototype for the spiritual life has built capacity to apply Bible Doctrine while under pressure by means of the filling of God the Holy Spirit.

24. “It is and keeps on being advantageous to you all that I depart (return to the Father).” Compare with John 13:16b; 33c; 36b; 14:2-3, 28.

25. Advantageous – SUMPHERO: Pres., Act., Ind.: It is advantageous to the Body of Christ that He return to the Father and send His Spirit.

26. His departure includes His arrest, the trials, the Cross, the burial, the resurrection, the ascension, and His session seated at the right hand of God.

27. “For if I do not depart then the Helper will absolutely not come to you all; but if I go, then I will send Him to you all.”

28. Helper - PARAKLETOS refers to the Holy Spirit as it did in John 14:16, 26; 15:26. It is also is used for Jesus Christ in 1 John 2:1.
