Chapter 9: Chemical Names and Formulas Naming and Writing Formulas for Molecular Compounds

Learning Target You will learn to name and write molecular compounds. (**different than LT sheet**)

Type III Binary Compounds Type III Binary Compounds are also called binary molecular compounds. Binary molecular compound – two nonmetallic elements bonded together. Different from the Type I and Type II because two nonmetals bonded instead of a metal and nonmetal bonded. You will learn to name and write molecular compounds.

Naming Type III Binary Compounds 1. The first element in the compound is named first, using the full element name. 2. The second element is named as an anion (root word with suffix –ide) 3. Prefixes are used to tell the number of atoms present. (Remember the subscripts in a compound tell you the number of atoms!) 4. Use a prefix on the 1st element EXCEPT when there is one atom 5. ALWAYS use a prefix on the 2 nd element, even if there is one atom You will learn to name and write molecular compounds.

Prefixes used in the Type III Binary Compounds You will learn to name and write molecular compounds.

Writing formulas for Type III Binary Compounds 1. Write the element symbol of the two elements present. 2. Look at the prefixes and assign them as subscripts (DON’T cross down!). 3. Remember - if there is no prefix on the first element it is because the subscript is ONE You will learn to name and write molecular compounds.

Examples Write the name or formula for the following compounds: 1. CCl 4 2. arsenic trifluoride 3. NO 2 4. dioxygen difluoride 5. IF 5 6. nitrogen monoxide 7. BF 3 8. Silicon dioxide Answers: 1. Carbon tetrachloride 2. AsF 3 3. Nitrogen dioxide 4. O 2 F 2 5. Iodine pentafluoride 6. NO 7. Boron trifluoride 8. SiO 2 You will learn to name and write molecular compounds.

Joke TEACHER: Donald, what is the chemical formula for water? DONALD: H I J K L M N O. TEACHER: What are you talking about? DONALD: Yesterday you said it's H to O. You will learn to name and write molecular compounds.

Try on your own Write the name or formula for the following compounds: 1. xenon hexafluoride 2. N 2 O 5 3. Diphosphorus pentoxide 4. I 2 O 7 5. Chlorine trifluoride 6. CO 2 7. Nitrogen monoxide 8. CF 4 Answers: 1. XeF 6 2. Dinitrogen pentoxide 3. P 2 O 5 4. Diiodine heptoxide 5. ClF 3 6. Carbon dioxide 7. NO 8. Carbon tetrafluoride You will learn to name and write molecular compounds.

SUMMARIZE Exit Slip 1. What is the difference between each of the 3 systems learned thus far? 2. What is the difference between a type I and type II cation? 3. How will YOU determine the difference between each of the 3 systems? Recap – 4 Q’s What is a Type III binary compound? How is this different from Type I and Type II? What are the eight prefixes? When do you use the prefixes? You will learn to name and write molecular compounds.

Homework Page 108 #10 and #11 Black letters only on both! You will learn to name and write molecular compounds.
