Our Approach Work with states, systems and institutions to implement evidence-based strategies at scale to see double-digit gains in outcomes.
4
Four-Year
5
Students are … Taking too much time Taking too many credits Spending too much money Not graduating

13
Remediation Too many students start college in remediation. 61% in 2-year institution 28% in 4-year, non- flagship institution
14
African Americans, Hispanics and Pell Students are Over Represented 2-year Students 4-year Non-Flagship Students
15
The System Does Not Work, Particularly for African Americans Gateway Course Completion in 2 years 2-year college remedial students
16
Few Graduate or Transfer Of 2-year students enrolled in remediation: 11% graduate in 3 years 18% transfer to 4-year institution (w/ or w/out a degree) in 4 years
17
Remediation Student attrition is at the heart of the matter…
18
Corequisite Remediation Provide academic support as a corequisite, not a prerequisite. More time on task and help for students when they need it (just in time).
19
One Semester Redesigned Gateway Gateway Extra Time Mandatory Tutoring Sequenced Paired, proctored labs 45 minutes after class Additional class periods 5-week prep + 10 weeks of gateway content
20
One Semester Scaled Results 22% Traditional Remediation National Avg for Gateway Course Success English Math

#15toFinish
29
Full-time Students Taking 15+ Credits Per Semester 29 Most students don’t take the necessary credits to graduate on time
30
The Power of 15 Credits: More students graduate when they complete 30+ credits in their first year.
31
Momentum Benefits: CC Students Source: Belfield, Jenkins & Lahr, 2016.
32
Momentum Benefits: 4-year students Source: Belfield, Jenkins & Lahr, 2016.
33
Best Practices Incorporate into advising and new student orientation. Launch marketing campaign for awareness of 15 and 30 credits for on-time completion. Set credit cap limits at 60 and 120 credits. Build academic maps at 15 credits per term and 30 credits per year. Consider banded tuition (same tuition rate for 12-18 credits ). Incentivize via state & campus aid programs.
34
New Campaign
35
CCA Calls for “On-Time” Status in Pell
36
Fifteen To Finish: Scaling 7 State-wide Campaigns 200+ Campuses w/ Credit Limits 116+ Campuses w/ Campaigns 93+ Campuses w/ Banded Tuition Policy CCA 2016 Summer Policy Institute – Including partner & attendance from National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) members
37
Structured Schedules
38
Today’s Students 70% of students are non-traditional. 70% of students commute to campus. 40% of students work 30 hours a week. 25% of students work full time and attend college full time. 20% of students have children.
39
What are Structured Schedules? Predictable schedule, constant throughout. Morning, afternoon, evening or weekend blocks 5-days a week or certain days Shorter term courses Organized by program
40
Where there is structure, there are significant results. 40 85% completion First Cohort: Structured career certificate programs in welding, machine tool, automotive, HVAC, mechatronics, and office technology. IVY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM IVY TECH COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM 90% retention New Cohorts:
