Welcome Sunday, October 23, 2016 23rd Sunday after Pentecost Holy Communion
2
CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. Amen. Let us come into the light, the revealing and healing light of God. God of grace and glory, you have brought us through the night of sin into the light of Jesus’ resurrection. Yet our lives are still shadowed by sin. Make us alive in Christ, O God.
3
Make us new as you make all things new. Rescue us from evil and the gloom of sin, renew us in grace, and restore us to living in your holiness, through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen.
4
Rejoice with all creation around God’s throne! The light of the risen Christ puts to flight all evil deeds, washes away sin, restores innocence to the fallen, casts out hate, brings peace, and humbles earthly pride. Jesus Christ loves you and ☩ frees you from your sins by his blood. To him be glory and dominion forever and ever! Amen.
5
PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. GATHERING SONG: THE GATHERED SHALL CHOOSE!
6
GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.
7
KYRIE (Red Hymnal p. 147) In peace, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.
8
For the peace of the whole world, for the well- being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen.
9
CANTICLE OF PRAISE (Red Hymnal p. 148) This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia. Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God. Power and riches and wisdom and strength, and honor and blessing and glory are his. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia.
10
Sing with all the people of God and join in the hymn of all creation: Blessing and honor and glory and might be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen. This is the feast of victory for our God, for the Lamb who was slain has begun his reign. Alleluia.
11
PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Holy God, our righteous judge, daily your mercy surprises us with everlasting forgiveness. Strengthen our hope in you, and grant that all the peoples of the earth may find their glory in you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
12
FIRST READING: Jeremiah 14:7-10, 19-22 A reading from Jeremiah. 7 Although our iniquities testify against us, act, O L ORD, for your name’s sake; our apostasies indeed are many, and we have sinned against you. 8 O hope of Israel, its savior in time of trouble, why should you be like a stranger in the land, like a traveler turning aside for the night? 9 Why should you be like someone confused, like a mighty warrior who cannot give help? Yet you, O L ORD, are in the midst of us, and we are called by your name; do not forsake us!
13
10 Thus says the L ORD concerning this people: Truly they have loved to wander, they have not restrained their feet; therefore the L ORD does not accept them, now he will remember their iniquity and punish their sins. 19 Have you completely rejected Judah? Does your heart loathe Zion? Why have you struck us down so that there is no healing for us? We look for peace, but find no good; for a time of healing, but there is terror instead.
14
20 We acknowledge our wickedness, O L ORD, the iniquity of our ancestors, for we have sinned against you. 21 Do not spurn us, for your name’s sake; do not dishonor your glorious throne; remember and do not break your covenant with us. 22 Can any idols of the nations bring rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Is it not you, O L ORD our God? We set our hope on you, for it is you who do all this. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
15
PSALM: Psalm 84:1-7 1 How dear to me is your dwelling, O L ORD of hosts! 2 My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the L ORD ; my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. 3 Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young, by the side of your altars, O L ORD of hosts, my king and my God.
16
4 Happy are they who dwell in your house! They will always be praising you. 5 Happy are the people whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on the pilgrims’ way. 6 Those who go through the balsam valley will find it a place of springs, for the early rains have covered it with pools of water. 7 They will climb from height to height, and the God of gods will be seen in Zion.
17
SECOND READING: 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18 A reading from 2 Timothy. 6 As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
18
16 At my first defense no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! 17 But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
19
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (North New Hope) (Red Hymnal p. 151) Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia. (FAITH): Celtic Alleluia (Red Hymnal # 174) Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia.
20
GOSPEL: Luke 18:9-14 The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. 9 [Jesus] also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus,
21
‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.” The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

HYMN OF THE DAY Take, Oh, Take Me As I Am (Red Hymnal # 814) Take, oh, take me as I am; summon out what I shall be; set your seal upon my heart and live in me. (Repeat 5 times)
25
CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again;
26
he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
28
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Set free by the truth of God’s gracious love, we pray for the church, the world, and all of God’s good creation. Only you are righteous, O God. Lead your church to true repentance so that we reflect your light and truth to the world. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.
29
Only you can bring rain, O God. Be with those who lack clean water or must walk miles to quench their thirst. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Only you can judge the nations, O God. Raise up leaders with humble hearts so that your peace spreads across the earth. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Only you can bring healing, O God. Be with all whose hearts ache, who hold out empty hands, who long for forgiveness. Comfort the grieving and heal the sick (especially). Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.
30
Only you know the depths of our hearts, O God. Call this congregation to loving action in your name and open our eyes to what you are doing among us. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Those who live in your house are happy, O God. Keep us by your grace until we join (James of Jerusalem, martyr, and all) the saints around your throne. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Into your hands, faithful God, we place ourselves and our prayers, spoken and unspoken, trusting in your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.
31
OFFERING Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with your free Spirit. OFFERING PRAYER Blessed are you, O God, ruler of heaven and earth. Day by day you shower us with blessings. As you have raised us to new life in Christ, give us glad and generous hearts, ready to praise you and to respond to those in need, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
32
DIALOGUE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.
33
PREFACE: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn :
34
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Holy, holy, holy Lord, Lord God of pow'r and might: Heav'n and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
35
THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE Holy God, Breath of life and Fire of love: with a mighty wind you brought creation into being, and by a pillar of fire you led your people into freedom. We praise you for the gift of your Son, who poured out your Spirit on his disciples of every race and nation. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
36
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and the sending of the holy and life-giving Spirit, we await his coming again to renew the face of the earth.
37
Send now your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this meal: anoint us with your gifts of faith, hope, and love, that, with thankful hearts, we may be witnesses to your Son. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen
38
LORD’S PRAYER Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
39
INVITATION TO COMMUNION The table of life is spread before you. Feast on the goodness and mercy of God. COMMUNION The body of Christ, given for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you. Amen.
40
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION We give you thanks, O God, that you make your home with us, bringing heaven to earth in this holy meal. Fill us with your Spirit as we go from here, that we may wipe away tears, tend to those in mourning and pain, seek the healing of the nations, and bring to earth the presence of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
41
BLESSING The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord’s face shine upon you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and ☩ give you peace. Amen.
42
SENDING SONG Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling (Red Hymnal # 582) 1 Holy Spirit, ever dwelling in the holiest realms of light; Holy Spirit, ever brooding o'er a world of gloom and night; Holy Spirit, ever raising those of earth to thrones on high; living, life-imparting Spirit, you we praise and magnify.
43
2 Holy Spirit, ever living as the church's very life; Holy Spirit, ever striving through us in a ceaseless strife; Holy Spirit, ever forming in the church the mind of Christ: you we praise with endless worship for your gifts and fruits unpriced.
44
3 Holy Spirit, ever working through the church's ministry; quick'ning, strength'ning, and absolving, setting captive sinners free; Holy Spirit, ever binding age to age and soul to soul in communion never ending, you we worship and extol.
45
DISMISSAL Alleluia. Go in peace. Share the good news. Thanks be to God. Alleluia.
