Apostle’s Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell, The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy Catholic Church; The communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen

Today’s Psalm Reading Psalms 95 1 Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. 3 For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. 5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. 6 Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; 7 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the desert, 9 where your fathers tested and tried me, though they had seen what I did.
8
Today’s Psalm Reading Psalms 95 10 For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways.” 11 So I declared an oath in my anger, “They shall never enter my rest.”

Matthew Chapter 23 1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2 “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 “So you must obey them and do everything the tell you, Bud do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4 “They tie up heavy loads and put them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. 5 “Everything they do is for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; 6 “they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7 “they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them ‘Rabbi.’ 8 “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one Master and you are all brothers.
11
Matthew Chapter 23 9 “And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10 “Nor are you to be called ‘teacher,’ for you have one Teacher, the Christ. 11 “The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. 13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. 15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.
12
Matthew Chapter 23 16 “Woe to you, bind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17 “You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? 18 “You also say, “If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.’ 19“You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20“Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and everything on it. 21“And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it.
13
Matthew Chapter 23 22“And he who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it. 23“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices – mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law – justice, mercy, and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter without neglecting the former. 24“You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. 25“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26“Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
14
Matthew Chapter 23 27“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. 28“In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. 29“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30“And you say, ‘If I had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31“So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.
15
Matthew Chapter 23 32“Fill up, then, the measure of the sin of your forefathers! 33“You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? 34“Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. 35“And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of the righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36“I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation. 37“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.
16
Matthew Chapter 23 38“Look, your house is left to you desolate. 39“For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’

The Description of False Spiritual Leaders Dialogue between Jesus and Temple authorities has ended Jesus now spoke directly to the crowd and to His disciples – Scribes and Pharisees were nearby Five characteristics of False Spiritual Leaders 1.Lack Authority 2.Lack Integrity 3.Lack sympathy 4.Lack spirituality 5.Lack humility Then Jesus said to the crowd and to his disciples (23:1)
22
False Leaders Lack Authority (v. 2) Scribes and Pharisees seated themselves in Moses’ seat – Not appointed by God – Not elected by the people To sit in “Moses’ seat” – God’s authoritative spokesman – Claim that many scribes and Pharisees made for themselves “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat.” (23:2)
23
False Leaders Lack Integrity (v. 3) Lack of integrity – demanding of others many things the never do themselves Jesus said obey instructions that conform to scripture “But do not do what they do.” – They did occasionally teach God’s word – But, they did not practice what they preached “So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.” (23:3)
24
False Leaders Lack Sympathy (v. 4) False leaders are loveless and uncaring Heavy loads of religious regulations, rules, and rituals – These loads are unbearable – When men fail to follow them, they are chided and rebuked by the religious leaders – Added guilt to the burden People taught only good works please God and guarantee entrance into heaven Good news from Jesus – He would take away the load of sin that always outweighed their good works “They tie up heavy loads and put them on men’s shoulders, but they themsel ves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.” (23:4)
25
False Leaders Lack Spirituality (v. 5) False leaders have no genuine desire to please God Everything is done for: – Outward show rather than from the heart – Gratification of ego rather than selfless service to God and others – Issue is fleshly appearance not godly character Religious leaders paraded their piousity – Broadened their phylacteries and wore them continuously – Lengthened their tassels that marked them as Pharisees Forgot the purpose of phylacteries and tassels – Remind the people of God and His word – Motivators to obey God’s word “Everything they do is for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long.” (23:5)
26
False Leaders Lack Humility (vv. 6-7) Loved the place of honor at banquets – Vied with each other for a place at the host’s table in order to be the center of attention Loved special treatment when they were greeted in the market place Enjoyed being called “Rabbi” which was a formal and respectful title “They love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in th e synagogue; they love to be greeted in the market places and to have men ca ll them ‘Rabbi’.” (23:6-7)
27
True Leaders Avoid Elevated Titles (vv. 8-10) Godly spiritual leaders are to shun pretentious titles such as ‘Rabbi’ – Jesus is the one, true teacher – Jesus is the supreme and only source of divine truth, for which human teachers are but channels of communication Human teachers, including the apostles, are all brothers with every other believer – No man regardless of his calling is spiritually superior “Father” means spiritual father – Superior spiritual position – Source of spiritual life – “Father” in the spiritual sense must be reserved for God “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one Master and you ar e all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have only one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called ‘teacher,’ for you have on e Teacher, the Christ.” (23:8-10)
28
True Leaders Accept Lowly Service (vv. 11-12) The greatest person is the one who is a willing servant – Jesus was the perfect servant – His mission on earth was not to be served but to serve Summary by Jesus – “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” – Opposite of the world’s standard for exaltation “The greatest among you will be your servant. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” (23:11-12)
29
Conclusion Unlike proud and arrogant scribes and Pharisees True spiritual leaders – Work in God’s authority – Lives in integrity, sympathy, spirituality, humility, and lowly service – Filled with grace, mercy, love, and willing self-giving – Manifests the heart of a servant who humbles himself and exalts God.

Last Week’s Verse “If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions. (22:45-46)
31
This Week’s Verse “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one Master and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘Father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called ‘teacher,’ for you have one Teacher, the Christ.” (23:8-10)

Today’s phrase No one dared to ask him any more questions. No one __________ to ask him any more questions. On the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. On the outside you [it] appear[s] _____________ but on the inside you [it] are [is] ___________.
33
This Week’s Conversation A: Who is the Messiah? Whose son is he? B: Well, everyone knows that a son of David would become the Messiah. It is all over the scripture. A: Who do you think the Messiah is? Whose son is he? B: Well, Jesus marvelously clarifies this in Matthew 22:45 that the Messiah is not only the son of David, but also the Son of God. A: Then whose son is Jesus Christ? B: He is the son of David and also the Son of God. A: Hallelujah! You got that right on.
34
Next Week’s Conversation A: Why do you think Jesus was so critical of the scribes and Pharisees? B: That’s easy. They were such hypocrites. A: What do you mean when you say they were hypocrites? B: Hypocrites are people who pretend to be right with God and tell you how you should live your life, but they do not live their lives in the same way. A: Can you give me an example of how the Pharisees were hypocrites? B: Well they reminded the Jewish people of all the legalistic rituals they were to follow in their daily lives according to Jewish tradition and criticized the people when they violated even one law. Yet, in private they also did not abide by all of laws, because the laws were too burdensome. A: So a hypocrite is a person who does not practice what they preach. B: Exactly, the motto of a hypocrite is, “Do as I say, not as I do.”
