Action Verbs Zach And Payton

What is an action verb? Any verb that modifies a noun to make it physically do something.

Example 1- The cat ran quickly. In this sentence RAN is an action verb because it modifies the noun CAT and makes it perform an action.

Don’t do this! 1- The cat is orange. IS is a verb in this sentence but IT IS NOT an action verb. It is a linking verb connecting cat and orange.

Transitive VS Intransitive What’s the difference? - Transitive is when the action verb comes before the object that is receiving the action. - Intransitive is when the action verb comes after the noun that it modifies and it is not followed by an object.

Examples 1- I cleaned the windows yesterday. 2- The girl cried quietly.

Now You Try 1- We enjoy teaching the class. T or IT 2- George screamed wildly. T or IT 3- Payton plays the drums. T or IT

Strong Action Verbs It is important to use strong action verbs in your writing career. Example: Zach ran. Stronger action verbs: - Sprinted, chased, dashed, darted

Replace the Action Verb! 1- Mrs. Gray yelled angrily at Green Class. 2- Payton jumped majestically. 3- The airplane flew high in the sky. 4- The dog walked across the street.

Formative Assessment Everyone take out a piece of paper. Copy down the following sentences. Circle the action verb Draw an arrow to the object performing the action. Decide whether it is Transitive or Intransitive. Replace the current action verb with a stronger action verb.
