2 Unrest in the backcountry Governor Tryon defeated the Regulators at the Battle of Alamance Governor Tryon was responsible for the construction of the Tryon Palace

3 Regulator Movement The first Regulator meeting took place in Orange County Regulators: westerners who wanted better control of the government

4 The Spread of the Regulators In the 1760’s, Governor Tryon persuaded the Assembly to move the capital to New Bern Tryon Palace was constructed; meeting place for the council and the governor’s home Regulators protested in 1768

5 People Edmund Fanning: Register of Deeds in Orange County Herman Husband and William Butler: leaders of the Regulator movement Josiah Martin: last royal governor of N.C

6 Acts Johnston Riot Act: moved cases that involved riots from the county that they took place in to another colony

7 Acts Sugar Act: placed taxes on molasses, coffee wine silk

8 Acts Stamp Act: placed taxes on paper goods (pamphlets, newspapers and legal documents)

9 Acts Townshend Act: placed taxes on paper, glass, lead, brought into the colonies wine tea

10 No Taxation w/o Representation Colonists believed that they did not have representation in Parliament

11 Tea Parties and Congresses In the 1770’s the committees of correspondence was formed to keep the colony informed of British actions

12 Patriots: colonists who resisted the tighter controls imposed by the British N.C patriots captured Fort Johnston in July 1775 on the lower Cape Fear River

13 Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge On February 27,1776, minutemen met loyalists at the bridge over Moore’s Creek The defeat of the loyalists left N.C free from invasion from Britain for 4 yrs.
