2 IMMIGRANTS AND INVENTORS DURING THE TURN OF THE CENTURY 5 th Grade Social Studies

3 Standard:  SS5H3 The student will describe how life changed in America at the turn of the century. a. A. Describe the impact on American life of the Wright brothers (flight), George Washington Carver (Science), Alexander Graham Bell (communication), and Thomas Edison (electricity). b. D. Describe the reasons people emigrated to the United States, from where they emigrated, and where they settled.

4 European Immigrants  Immigrants are people from other countries who move here.  Before 1870, most immigrants came to the U.S. from northern and western European countries like Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, and Norway.  Almost all of the immigrants who came after 1870 were from southern and eastern European countries like Italy, Poland, and Russia.  Over 200,000 Chinese came during1850 -1880  Over 400,000 Japanese came during1870 - 1920

5 European Immigrants  Immigrants brought many different religions and so soon there were many different places to worship.  The colonists were mostly Protestant Christians  New arrivals included Catholic, Eastern Orthodox Christians and Jewish immigrants.  Big cities neighborhoods were formed: “Little Italy” and “Chinatown.”

6 Inventors  Orville and Wilbur Wright: 2 Americans who built the first successful airplane & flew it on Dec. 17, 1903. Story of the Wright BrothersStory of the Wright Brothers  George Washington Carver: African American who taught former slaves farming methods. He developed crop rotation method. Cotton farming used up many of the nutrients in the soil & Carver taught the farmers to grow crops every other year that would enrich the soil. Peanuts, peas, soybeans, sweet potatoes, pecans  Carver also invented more than 300 products that use peanuts, like cosmetics, dye, paint, plastic, and fuel.

7 Inventors  Alexander Graham Bell: fascinated by the deaf and invented the “electrical speech machine” in 1876. We call it the telephone. Bell movieBell movie  Thomas Edison worked with electricity. He patented 1,093 inventions, including the electric light bulb, the phonograph (record player) and the movie projector. Edison and the Electric LightEdison and the Electric Light  The light bulb changed business and how people lived. Factories could stay open later and produce more goods. Edison came up with electric power companies to provide entire cities with electricity.
