1
What are the main barriers – for individual academics, for institutions? What have you found works? What have you found doesn’t work? What would make a difference at a sectoral level i.e. a tangible “thing” that they feel the SIG or another agency could do to help move things forward either within institutions or across the sector.
2
Some commercial providers already liaising with sector to seek out future developments (Bb, SITS) Develop agreed workflows/process maps which can then be discussed with suppliers to see how they can make them operational in their systems Need compromise which recognises diversity of assessment process but is technically feasible Central repository of who is using which systems (VLE, SRS, e- assessment, etc.) UCISA ? More “oomph” if multiple institutions make representations to influence commercial providers rather than single HEIs How can JISC help support institutions. Not worked this way before but not necessarily a reason why they don’t going forward Where could we host materials and resources which HEIs wish to make available to other institutions ? What are potential risks as well as potential barriers in looking at embedding e-assessment and getting it wrong
3
Possibility of a research assistant to work out what the sector needs and help maintain resources Evaluations of potential competitor tools instead of Turnitin Create definitive list of affordances of e-assessment tools including VLEs Assessment is a complex process with significant diversity of implementation – technical systems need to be able to cope with much (not necessarily all) of this “Peer” issues difficult – peer review, peer marking, etc – Workshop tool in Moodle OK for peer review, WebPA and PeerMark other forms of peer assessment A lot of “legacy practice” in terms of how assessment undertaken – assessment review a chance to debunk some of this ? Learning technologists uniquely placed perhaps to undertake process review of assessment etc ? (JISC Infokit) Look at pedagogic issues or challenges and look to see where technology can be an opportunity to challenge existing practice
4
Implementing and supporting EMA can be a real time overhead to LT teams – again tied in with unique position of LTs to undertake this work Engaging with this helps share understanding of institutional processes Where do learning technologists sit within institutions ? JISC work in this area ? What are the pedagogical drivers for “e-assessment” ? – Efficiency ? Quality ? Student Experience ? More research needed… Help build business case for technology use in assessment How can enthusiastic individual activity be expanded to faculty or institutional activity (e.g. Cath Ellis) Debunk some of the myths ? Provide evidence to counteract Use student perceptions of e-feedback to encourage academics Push feedback and marks to students rather than rely on them coming to collect it (ESCAPE project)
5
Create Google Doc to collect (a) current operational issues and (b) features and functions currently not implemented Can effective embedding in practice overcome any technical barriers/problems
6
Take it really steady – don’t rush in to doing this quickly “Fool’s Rush In” – possible loss of reputation of getting it wrong If we have rushed in – how do we preserve ourselves Want the technology to help me not hinder me Find a mechanism to get the university to talk the same language together Look at process reviews to see what others have done
