The minimum size for slide decks that will be read should be 10 The aim of the new assessment program is to: Push students towards a higher international standard and expected CEFR outcomes Balance formal testing with more continuous assessment of students Improve the reliability, validity and accuracy of assessment Have a positive influence on the standard and development of teaching in schools Provide useful feedback / data on performance regarding students, schools and teachers Give an accurate reflection of students’ actual English abilities How and why is assessment changing?

The minimum size for slide decks that will be read should be 10 Summative assessment includes mid-term exams, end of term and end of year exams and the SPTs [summative performance tasks]. Continuous Assessment / Summative Performance Tasks. These can be assessed projects which groups collaborate on and present. You will be informed which marks will be used for the SIS. A focus on formative assessment and assessment for learning (AFL) – continually assessing the learning and progress of individual students and giving constructive feedback / support. There will also be diagnostic tests for both streaming and formative use in Cycle 3. What will the new assessment system include?

The rubrics are sufficiently detailed so as to allow for detailed feedback and reliability. Thus, drip down training and standardisation is required. Marking will be done in-house. However, random samples will be taken for moderation to ensure the accuracy/reliability of marking. How will marking work?

However, random samples will be taken for moderation to ensure the accuracy/reliability of marking. Lead teachers will be responsible for this process The SMME Procedure

Using constantly updated resources ALL teachers must attend these sessions which will be documented by the Lead Teacher. M= All writing exams should be first and second marked. This process will be detailed separately M= After each end of term and end of year exam a moderation session must be held, taking a selection of high, medium and low grades. All staff need to be involved in the SMME cycle for exams, preparing students and continually assessing individual students in terms of curriculum outcomes / upcoming assessments through the use of formative and AFL. Lead Teachers will take extra responsibility, with the support of their colleagues, in practical administration of tests. What are our roles in this?

15 Final points to note An opportunity has arisen for you to apply to join the new English Assessment Department. Stage 1: Send ‘an expression of interest’ email to gemma.escott@moe.gov.ae and CC lewis.hall@moe.gov.ae, Hayley.holuj@moe.gov.ae and your line manager / sector specialist. The email should be sent before 8pm on Sunday 21 st of August.gemma.escott@moe.gov.aelewis.hall@moe.gov.ae Hayley.holuj@moe.gov.ae In the email you should: Outline any formal training you may have had in assessment, this includes university courses or those run by language organisations such as Trinity, British Council or Cambridge. You must outline your experience of test writing at the class, school or higher levels. You must define your understanding of Summative, Formative and Assessment for Learning in the context of English language learning You should explain why you feel you would be a valuable addition to the team and state explicity the skills that you would contribute Stage 2: If you are selected you will be notified by 8pm Monday 22 nd of August and will be expected to attend the Sharjah institute at 9:30am [in the library] Thursday 25 th of August to sit an assessment that will test your current level of assessment knowledge and skill.
