BIE video – PBL – concept BIE video – PBL Edutopia video – actual PBL in school-setting Edutopia video
4
Principles of a a good PBL Curriculum-based and contextualized themes: C Real-world issues R Expert thinking needed E Achievable and measurable results A Teamwork T Extending learning time and space beyond classroom boundaries E
5
Select content area Issue / problem – (gap: status vs desired; entry event/ scenario) What do you want to do about it? (driving question) Project objectives, target audience Target outputs What (general) activities should be done? What skills and knowledge are needed? Roles? Learning objectives? Which subject area/s or discipline/s should be involved? Workplan

Agenda: Day 2 Session 4: PBL Activity System Design Introduction to learning activity design for PBL Collaboration Groupwork and Presentation: Activity System Design Session 5: ICT-PBL Integration Introduction to appropriate online/offline ICT tools/resources for PBL and collaborative learning Hands-on Activities and Groupwork Session 6: Assessment in PBL Introduction to assessment in PBL ICT tools for assessment Hands-on Activities and Groupwork

How To Design Project Based Learning : Activity (System) Design ICT in Education, APEID UNESCO Bangkok
8
Overview PBL Activity (System) Design Lesson plan design Learning objectives, timeline, instructional strategies, resources, roles Group work group presentations (10 minutes max)
9
PBL Activity Design You are to design an “Activity System”, not just an activity. Learning Materials (textbook, ICT, etc) Rules of interaction Facilitation Roles Learning outcome Teacher Students Learning objectives
10
PBL Activity Design What if you do not pay attention to one or more of the elements? Teacher Students Learning objectives Learning outcome Learning Materials (textbook, ICT, etc) Roles Rules of interaction Facilitation Confusion, frustration, and loads of challenges!
11
Phases/ Key Steps of PBL Time Frame Students’ Outputs Students’ Activities & Tasks, Collaboration Teachers’ Facilitation / Roles Resources / Materials Needed Form of Evaluatio n & Criteria STEP 5. Activity System Design (for teachers)
12
Select content area Issue / problem – (gap: status vs desired; entry event/ scenario) What do you want to do about it? (driving question) Project objectives, target audience Target outputs What (general) activities should be done? What skills and knowledge are needed? Roles? Learning objectives? Which subject area/s or discipline/s should be involved? Workplan: Specific activities? Dependencies? Timetable? Who should be involved? What resources are needed? Deliverable at each phase (based on message, target audience, etc.)? How to assess progress and evaluate achievement of targets?
14
Students’ Involvement Students’ Outputs review project objectives vis-a-vis learning objectives Students’ Activities & Tasks relevant to learning objectives and desired output Collaboration Why? In what way? roles
15
Phases/ Key Steps of PBL Time Frame Students’ Outputs Students’ Activities & Tasks, Collaboration Teachers’ Facilitation / Roles Resources / Materials Needed Form of Evaluatio n & Criteria STEP 5. Activity System Design (for teachers) Interim outputs (per project phase)
16
Why Collaborative Learning? Why do you think working together (collaboration) is an important skill? What would students benefit from working together?
17
Students can clarify and organize their ideas well enough to verbalize them to others. Students have opportunities to elaborate on what they have learned. Students are exposed to the views of others – views that may reflect a more accurate understanding of the topics under discussion. Students discover how people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds may interpret the world in different but valid ways. Some Benefits of Collaboration
18
Working together With whom? In what way? To what extent? With whom? In what way? To what extent? Deciding together? Delegation of tasks? Combination of ideas? Contribution of talents / expertise? Collaboration Provide feedback? Exchange information? How??
19
In what ways? Sharing ideas Research Peer mentoring Project management Producing an output (product or performance) – Collective/Collaborative writing – Campaign/Exhibit materials – Movie production – Etc.
20
In what ways? Subject Area Single Inter-disciplinary Social action Implications on types of interactions, resources, roles Intra class Inter classgradeschoolcommunitycultural
21
Challenges in Collaborative Learning What do you think would be the challenges in collaborative learning? Keep monitoring your students’ progress!!!!
22
Have a sound plan! (and talk about it) – Clarify parameters, assumptions, and learning goals – Parameters: participants, processes, timetable, expected outputs – Discuss implications Pedagogy first then choose technologies!!!! Set up roles (especially for beginners in PBL) Discuss and agree on rules of engagement Agree on evaluation rubrics Have students reach consensus before taking any action Encourage participation by showcasing interactions / outputs Reflection, reflection, reflection! (you and your students) Principles for Successful Collaborative Learning (with/out ICT)
23
What would be your role in this kind of collaborative learning? Your Role in Collaboration
24
Phases/ Key Steps of PBL Time Frame Students’ Outputs Students’ Activities & Tasks, Collaboration Teachers’ Facilitation / Roles Resources / Materials Needed Form of Evaluatio n & Criteria STEP 5. Activity System Design (for teachers) In what ways?
25
Role of Teachers Phases of PBLRole of Teacher 1. Planning - discussion of a project topic, setting targets and timelines, tasking Provide general instructions, encourage open-ended discussions, guide/coach learners, facilitate, ask questions, provide feedback, provide access to resources, manage the process 2. Fieldwork - gathering and compiling information and resources 3. Production – developing the output 4. Presentation - presenting the output to an audience 5. Assessment – formative and summative, self- and group reflection Facilitate self- (and peer) assessment, assess learners’ work and provide feedback
