Objective: Develop hybrid biological semiconductors which are EMP resistant and whose electronic properties can be directly manipulated by environmental stimuli Technical Challenges and Risk: Defining precise conditions with which to introduce biological dopants into semiconductors in a controlled manner and in precise orientation Imparting external control such as on/off switches via genetic modification of the dopant Generalizing design conditions to other dopants and semiconductor materials may not be possible Biological Semiconductors with Unique Electronic Properties Insert PI Name, Insert PI Organization Insert PI Organization City and State Relevance and Applications: Semiconductors are ubiquitous in military systems and are subject to corrosion and EMP disruption. Biological semiconductors would be EMP resistant and impervious to corrosion Biological semiconductors will enable design of new classes of electronic devices and self-healing electronic network architectures Milestones and Deliverables Year 1. Design and build benchtop foundry to mimic semiconductor production conditions and establish conditions to grow extremophiles. Year 2. Establish parameters for controlled nucleation of semiconductor wafers with extremophile dopant and initiate morphological and electrochemical characterization Year 3. Design abiotic version of dopant and introduce into semiconductor wafer. Deliver completely abiotic version of a biological semiconductor with external control capability Experimental Approach (in graphic form with supporting words) New Science: Bridge the connection and time scales between the languages of biology and electronics Understand and control the mechanisms of bio- corrosion Budget: (labor, materials, travel, overhead) POC: (name, phone, email)

ROM Cost and Schedule: Describe performance period and total costs by fiscal year. Identify any milestone decision points that may occur Deliverables: Identify all deliverables by funding year (hardware, software, test documents, manuals, drawings, transition plans, etc. Point of Contact: Include the principal investigator’s full name, address, phone number and email Description of Effort: Describe objectives, methodology and enhanced operational capability end user will receive from the effort Challenges: Specify the 3 main scientific challenges this effort addresses in bullet list Provide a picture or graphic that conveys the final capability of research and its concept. Include weight and size where appropriate Benefits of Proposed Effort: Describe the benefits this effort provides over current technology and/or practices. Explain how the project provides an innovative SOLUTION to the problem at hand. Proposed Technical Approach: Specify problem approach, describe tasks to be performed, summarize any actions to date, describe technology involved and how it solves the problem Risk: Identify the most significant risk associated with this effort, its potential impact, step(s) taken to mitigate. Quad charts are analogous to an “elevator speech”- you have minimal time to briefly inform a non-technical audience about the merits of your technology and create interest. Once an interest is established, you may be afforded about an hour to brief interested parties about your technology, usually in person or via a web cast. This follow on meeting is your opportunity to use technical jargon and go into greater detail. These charts are also used to create an interest among potential customers in the Government but are never shared outside Government. Please create one white paper for each technology that you think has application to these programs. Titles will be Arial 16 point font. All slide text will be in Arial 11 point font. Each slide shall be less than 500 kb (.5 Meg) and must be in PowerPoint format using the master slide template provided in this file. File naming convention is “Quad Chart YOUR CAPABILITY.ppt”. You may use one back-up page to further explain your good idea. Guidance To reduce file sizes: double click an image click on the "picture" tab click the “compress button” click the “all pictures in document bubble” click the “web/screen” bubble For the ROM (rough order of magnitude) Cost and Schedule, it is important that you identify the approximate level of resources needed to accomplish the project. The ROM and cost should be sufficient to ensure successful completion of project milestones and deliverables. Lastly, using PowerPoint's “View, Notes Page” option allows you to include contact information. Figure 2 Quad Chart Guidance 9
