What is a samurai? A samurai was a loyal warrior that protected the daimyo’s land and enforced the daimyo’s rule/laws. Samurai were the reason that the emperor had very little real power. Samurai followed a strict warrior code called bushido. Bushido, or the “way of the warrior,” values honor, discipline, courage, and morality above everything, even wealth and life. Samurai wore impressive leather-made armor and frightening masks. They fought on horseback as skilled swordsmen and archers.

"…Tomoe was especially beautiful, with white skin, long hair, and charming features. She was also a remarkably strong archer, and as a swordswoman she was a warrior worth a thousand, ready to confront a demon or a god, mounted or on foot. She handled unbroken horses with superb skill; she rode unscathed down perilous descents. Whenever a battle was imminent, Yoshinaka sent her out as his first captain, equipped with strong armor, an oversized sword, and a mighty bow; and she preformed more deeds of valor than any of his other warriors.” (Tale of the Heike, translated by McCullough, pg. 291) Tomoe Gozen
