TOG, Dwingeloo, March 2006, A. Szomoru, JIVE Status of e-VLBI @ JIVE Arpad Szomoru

TOG, Dwingeloo, March 2006, A. Szomoru, JIVE Outline Current status, recent results Network upgrades the LSL project EXPReS has started: now what?

TOG, Dwingeloo, March 2006, A. Szomoru, JIVE 2006 200320042005 Telescope last mile Events Connectivity: Ar: 32 Mbps, sometimes 64 Mbps all European stations: 128 Mbps Jb, Wb, On, sometimes Tr: 256 Mbps Wb, On (mostly), Jb (sometimes): 512 Mbps Connectivity: Ar: 32 Mbps, sometimes 64 Mbps all European stations: 128 Mbps Jb, Wb, On, sometimes Tr: 256 Mbps Wb, On (mostly), Jb (sometimes): 512 Mbps Current status: JIVE: 6 lambdas via Netherlight, each capable of 1 Gbps 1 Gbps connections to Westerbork, Torun, Onsala, Jodrell, Medicina 155 Mbps to Arecibo, 128 to Cambridge Metsahovi being connected at 10 Gbps now (?) Current status: JIVE: 6 lambdas via Netherlight, each capable of 1 Gbps 1 Gbps connections to Westerbork, Torun, Onsala, Jodrell, Medicina 155 Mbps to Arecibo, 128 to Cambridge Metsahovi being connected at 10 Gbps now (?)

TOG, Dwingeloo, March 2006, A. Szomoru, JIVE Recent developments Regular science/test sessions throughout the year First open call for e-VLBI science proposals First run completely lost due to a number of problems But, first ever real-time fringes to Mc (128Mbps) Not a single packet dropped by GÉANT

TOG, Dwingeloo, March 2006, A. Szomoru, JIVE

One to two months: switch from Cisco to Nortel/Avici equipment: 16 * 1 Gbps.

TOG, Dwingeloo, March 2006, A. Szomoru, JIVE Outline GÉANT2 network upgrade

TOG, Dwingeloo, March 2006, A. Szomoru, JIVE Tr connectivity bottleneck Black Diamond 6808 switches: New interfaces (10GE) system in old architecture (1GE) Originally 8x1GE interface per card 10GE NIC served by 8 x 1GE queues Queuing regime – RR (packet based) and flow-based Flow based: Max. flow capacity – 1Gbit/s – backround traffic. There is no known reordering workaround to solve this problem.

TOG, Dwingeloo, March 2006, A. Szomoru, JIVE Martin Swany

TOG, Dwingeloo, March 2006, A. Szomoru, JIVE

2 Heavy duty gamer PCs Tyan Thunder K8WE Motherboards Dual AMD Opteron 2.4GHz processors 4GB RAM 2 1Gb PCI-Expres Nics First one at Torun, back-to-back to Mark5 Second one located at Poznan Supercomputing Centre

TOG, Dwingeloo, March 2006, A. Szomoru, JIVE Now what? New hires: software/network engineers, e-VLBI postdoc Operational improvements (deliverable driven): Robustness Reliability Speed Ease Bandwidth Station feedback

TOG, Dwingeloo, March 2006, A. Szomoru, JIVE e-VLBI control interface

TOG, Dwingeloo, March 2006, A. Szomoru, JIVE Runtime control

TOG, Dwingeloo, March 2006, A. Szomoru, JIVE Ongoing New control computers (Solaris AMD servers) Cut down on (re-)start time Powerful code development platform Tightening up of existing code Other hardware upgrades: SX optics (fibres + NICs) Mark5A→B: motherboards, memory, power supplies, serial links. Surely, Mark5B has to be more reliable than the Station Units…

TOG, Dwingeloo, March 2006, A. Szomoru, JIVE And coming.. FABRIC: Distributed software correlation High bandwidth data transport SCARIe: Collaboration with SARA and UvA Distributed software correlation using Dutch grid Lambda switching, dynamical allocation of lightpaths
