Warwick Business School About myself  Email: francis.greene@warwick.ac.uk; office is social studies, room D1.22francis.greene@warwick.ac.uk  Taught the 1 st year Business School Integrative Planning module and the 2 nd Year Starting a Business for Engineers modules  Previously taught Entrepreneurship and Small Business (a forerunner of this module)  Worked last academic year for Barclays Bank and New Zealand’s Ministry of Economic Development  Research interest in entrepreneurship and small business – particular interests in new firms, growth firms, graduate entrepreneurship and enterprise policy

Warwick Business School Entrepreneurship courses come in 3 flavours…  In – specific training courses that seek to develop a particular aspect of entrepreneurship (e.g. financial planning skills) for those in business  For – courses that are for individuals currently seeking to set up their own venture  About – courses that are about developing an understanding of small business and entrepreneurship (e.g. individuals who work with small firms or individuals (99.5% of any enterprise population) or have a grounding in the issues for later life (I am a 1 in 8)

5. Warwick Business School Module aims  Module is an about module  “The module provides a solid conceptual understanding of the entrepreneurial development of new businesses. There are two main areas of interest: comparing large and small firms; and understanding the entrepreneurial development of new businesses.” (module overview on my wbs)  Focus is on an evidence based understanding of entrepreneurship and new businesses  Think of the claim that “entrepreneurs are born not made”. This implies that a persons disposition is more important than their situation. What do you think?

Warwick Business School 10 questions asked on the module  What is different about small businesses?  What is entrepreneurship?  What is a small business?  What is it like to work in a small business?  Are small businesses innovative?  What is a new business?  What are nascent entrepreneurs and how do their networks help?  What types of people set up in business?  What is business closure?  Why do businesses close?

Warwick Business School  12 CATS: Exam in summer term = 80%; group presentation this term = 20%  15 CATS: Exam in summer term = 65%; group presentation this term = 15%; individual report = 20%  Exam consists of 1½ hour exam of 2 questions from 6  Group presentation consists of working in a fixed team of 5 (these groups are randomly allocated) to present a 15 minute presentation on a particular question  Individual report consists of 1,000 on a particular topic to be given later on in the term

Warwick Business School What is being assessed?  Basis for exam, group presentations and individual report will be the questions in the textbook  Assessing your ability to read, think and communicate. All other things being equal, those that read more, think more and are better able to communicate will do better in this module  Generally, emphasis is on analysis and synthesis of evidence base rather than on description
