2 Brief Overview Academic Senate of the California State University (ASCSU) Official voice of the faculty Concerned with all system-wide matters Preserves campus autonomy Meets five times a year, week prior to BOT – September, November, January, March and May Long Beach has 3 senators – Dave Hood, Eileen Klink and self

3 September 2016 Plenary Calstate.edu/acadsen – Agendas, minutes and resolutions Reports by ASCSU chair and chairs of standing committees, and faculty trustee – each plenary Reports usually by Chancellor, EVC, AVC, CFA, CSSA, ERFA liaisons Sometimes CSU Trustees are invited

4 Chancellor and EVC Smith Chancellor White Pressed on Academic Freedom and Intellectual Property Lack of faculty representation in policy development CSU letter on CSULB website – please read CFA and ASCSU together or each separately EVC Blanchard Graduation Initiative 2025 – slides on CSULB website Goals for 4 yr/2 yr and URM/Pell graduation rates Presented at BOT – from 19% to 40% and ‘zero’ gaps Can go from 19% to 27% ‘easily’ by one term reduction of 4157 students, and gap from 11/8 down to zero.

5 Two Other Items Faculty Trustee Recommending Committee was elected Faculty Trustee term expires in Spring 2017 Nominations sought from campuses ASCSU elects two by two-thirds in March, sends names to Governor, who selects one Ethnic Studies Task Force Report (on website) Craig Stone and Maulana Karenga – Thanks! Respect and inherent value for ethnic studies and small departments, less focus on enrollment Need comprehensive education – GE courses Not GE, but NE.

6 Approved Resolutions Receipt of QRTF Report – on CSULB website Implement items from QRTF report that were previously approved by ASCSU – 4 yrs of Math/Quantitative Reasoning Support of Proposition 55 – Tax Extension – ‘Rich’ First Reading items Response to ACR 158 on smooth/streamlined transfers across/within systems Course Grading in the Golden Four – C and C- Establishment of an ASCSU Faculty Workgroup to study General Education – other stakeholders
