BIRDS IN THE TROPICS The tropical rainforest is home to many species of birds including parrots, hornbills, toucans, and raptors. Parrots are members of the Psittaciformes. There are more than 350 species in this classification including parakeets, macaws, cockatiels and cockatoos. The hornbills alone include around 55 different species. There are about 40 different species of toucans, and there are 320 species of raptors commonly found in the tropical climate. Of the most common birds in the tropical climate, there are over 770 different known species. It is not known how many species there are left to name, but birds are very abundant in the tropics.

TROPICS Hotspots Ecuador- 1515 species Indonesia- 1604 species Brazil- 1712 species Peru- 1824 species Columbia- 1871 species

BIRDS IN THE TEMPERATE AREA There are over 2000 known species of birds in the Temperate area. Birds like broad-winged hawks, cardinals, snowy owls, and pileated woodpeckers are found in the temperate zone. Many of these birds are not well adapted to the cold and must migrate to other areas during the winters.

BIRDS IN THE TUNDRA 400 known species in Winter during migration There are not many different species of birds in the tundra, but the ones well enough adapted to survive there are in abundance. Some of the most common birds of the tundra include the Arctic Tern, Snow Geese, Raven, Snowy Owl, and the Tundra Swan. These birds are typically well adapted to extreme cold temperatures, and do not have to migrate far away during the winters.

BLUE AND GOLD MACAW ECOLOGY Role- maintain balance in the tropical ecosystem Environmental conditions- adaptive to weather in the tropics Food- berries, seeds, nuts, some vegetables Provides energy for the Orange Breasted Falcon and Harp Eagles Yes they are necessary in the ecosystem Native- Eastern Panama and Central America through Colombia and Brazil
10
RAVEN ECOLOGY Role- they eat decomposing animals Environmental conditions- warm, dry weather and grassy plain areas Food- have been known to hunt down game in teams. They eat eggs, nestlings of coastal sea birds, grains, rodents, and worms. Provides energy for hawks, eagles, and bears Necessary- yes Native- northern hemisphere of any habitat
11
SNOWY OWL ECOLOGY Role- keep Lemming numbers down and maintain balance in the ecosystem Environment- Prefer cold winters but they have youth in the summer Food- they are carnivores. eat small rodents, rabbits, but they prefer lemmings Provides energy to wolves, falcons, and foxes Native- Alaska/ northern Canada, some can be found in northern US Yes they are necessary in the environment

FUN FACTS The smallest bird egg belongs to the hummingbird and is the size of a pea. The largest bird egg, from which the ostrich hatches, is the size of a cantaloupe. The penguin is the only bird that can swim, but not fly. It is also the only bird that walks upright. Within the United States, 74 bird species have become endangered and gone extinct

How can we help? Protect our wildlife by being against clearing areas of land in order to build a mall, sports complex, etc. Every time a tree is destroyed, so is a bird’s home.
