Apostle’s Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell, The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy Catholic Church; The communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen

Today’s Psalm Reading by Elijah Lee Psalms 92 1 It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High, 2 to proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night, 3 to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp. 4 For you make me glad by your deeds, O LORD; I sing for joy at the works of your hands. 5 How great are your works, O LORD, how profound your thoughts! 6 The senseless man does not know, fools do not understand, 7 that though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers flourish, they will be forever destroyed. 8 But you, O LORD, are exalted forever. 9 For surely your enemies, O LORD, surely your enemies will perish; all evildoers will be scattered.

Today’s Psalm Reading by Elijah Lee Psalms 92 10 You have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox; fine oils have been poured upon me. 11 My eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries; my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes. 12 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; 13 planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. 14 They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, 15 proclaiming, 'The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.'

Today’s Prayer Prayer by Elijah Lee

7 th Memorization Contest Designated Verses: Galatians 5:22-26 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

Today’s Reading Acts 9:32-43 32 As Peter traveled about the country, he went to visit the saints in Lydda. 33 There he found a man named Aeneas, a paralytic who had been bedridden for eight years. 34 'Aeneas,' Peter said to him, 'Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and take care of your mat.' Immediately Aeneas got up. 35 All those who lived in Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord. 36 In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which, when translated, is Dorcas), who was always doing good and helping the poor. 37 About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room.

Today’s Reading Acts 9:32-43 38 Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, 'Please come at once!' 39 Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them. 40 Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, 'Tabitha, get up.' She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. 41 He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called the believers and the widows and presented her to them alive.

Today’s Reading Acts 9:32-43 42 This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord. 43 Peter stayed in Joppa for some time with a tanner named Simon

This Week’s Verse There he found a man named Aeneas, a paralytic who had been bedridden for eight years. 'Aeneas,' Peter said to him, 'Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and take care of your mat.' Immediately Aeneas got up. (Acts 9:33-34)

Next Week’s Verse He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called the believers and the widows and presented her to them alive. This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord. (Acts 9:41-42)

Today’s phrase He got down on his knees and prayed. ______ got down on ______ knees and __________. He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. _____ took _____ by the hand and helped _____ to ____ feet. He was never too busy with the crowds to be available to help in time of need. ________ was never too _______________ to be available to ________________.

This Week’s Conversation A: What’s that in your hand? B: This? This is my notebook with a list of names that I have personal ministry with. A: Really? Let me see. B: I have names of several people I talk with every week and pray for them every day. A: And what are these names underneath? B: The names underneath are the people who each of the first group ministers. A: Wow. It’s like a family tree! B: Yes. It’s like a family tree. A: I think it’s exciting to have a personal ministry like yours. B: Sure it is. You should start your own soon.

Next Week’s Conversation A: Today, I saw a homeless person in our church. He was very smelly and dirty. B: Really? What happened? A: Eventually, people around him asked him to stay outside. B: That’s no good. Anyone, including homeless people, should be welcome in our church. A: I know but church people tend to have prejudice against non- believers and certain group of people. B: I know we all are guilty of having prejudice. But spirit-filled Christians should lack prejudice according to the Bible. A: Right. One must be spirit-filled to be devoid of prejudice. B: We should pray that we are full of the Holy Spirit and devoid of prejudice against other people.

Markers of an Effective Personal Ministry (Acts 9:32 – 43) He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called the believers and the widows and presented her to them alive. This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord. (Acts 9:41-42)

No matter how large their ministries may have been, God’s noblest servants have always taken the time to minister to individuals. Examples are seen from Moses, Jesus, Stephen, Paul, Luther and Calvin. The apostle Peter knew what it was to preach to the masses. From the day of Pentecost on he spoke to huge crowds in Jerusalem. He also preached twice before the Sanhedrin. This passage reveals the other side of Peter’s ministry, his personal service to individuals. Six elements of that service are implied, not from Peter’s direct teaching but indirectly from his actions. Introduction

Peter was effective with individuals because he was; Involved Christ-exalting Available Prayerful Fruitful Free from prejudice. Peter’s effective personal ministry

36 In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which, when translated, is Dorcas), who was always doing good and helping the poor. 37 About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room. 38 Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, 'Please come at once!’ 39 Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them. Peter’s availability led to an even more astounding opportunity. Aeneas was healed, Dorcas was raised from the dead. While Peter was at Lydda, tragedy struck the church at nearby Joppa. One of the most beloved members was a certain disciple named Tabitha. The epitaph on this lovely lady was that this woman was abounding with deeds of kindness and charity, which she continually did. Specifically, she made clothes for the poor and needy. In contrast to Aeneas, she is specifically called a disciple. Dorcas was certainly an appropriate model for what a Christian woman should be. Peter was available (9:36-39)

Naturally when at that time she fell sick and died, it was a serious blow to the believers in Joppa. They washed her body in preparation for burial, as was customary. However, instead of burying her immediately, as was also customary, they laid her body in an upper room. Evidently, they had something else in mind. Lydda was near Joppa, and the disciples heard that Peter was there. No doubt they had also heard of his healing of Aeneas, which gave them an idea. They sent two men to Peter, entreating him urgently, “Do not delay to come to us.” Despite his consuming duties among the masses confessing Jesus as Lord, Peter arose and went with them. He was never too busy with the crowds to be available to help in time of need. Peter was available (9:36-39)

Peter saw firsthand how loved Dorcas was and what a loss her death was for the church at Joppa. All the widows of the church stood beside him weeping, and snowing all the tunics and garments that Dorcas used to make while she was with them. The church’s responsibility to care for widows, though often neglected today, was taken seriously in the early church. Employment opportunities for women were severely limited, and widows without family to care for them were often left destitute. The loss of Dorcas, therefore, was a serious blow to these widows. Peter was available (9:36-39)

Many believe that to deny women leadership roles in the church is to deny them the opportunity to minister. Nothing could be further from the truth. Dorcas neither preached nor led the newly born church, yet her ministry in the Joppa church was so crucial as to endear her to all. Peter was available (9:36-39)

As he had seen the Lord do when He raised Jairus’s daughter (Mark 5:40), Peter sent them all out of the room where Dorcas’s body lay. He would not put on a display before the crowd that would draw all attention to him, and wanted a quiet place to pray. He knew the source of his power and presumed nothing about the will of God. Accordingly, he knelt down and prayed. Essential to all successful ministries, prayer acknowledges dependence on God. Prayer realizes that God is “able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to [His] power that works within us” (Eph. 3:20). Peter was prayerful (9:40-41):

40 Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, 'Tabitha, get up.' She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. 41 He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called the believers and the widows and presented her to them alive. Peter had learned the importance of prayer from His Lord, having seen and heard Him many times in communion with His Father. Having finished praying, Peter turned to Dorcas’s body and said, “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up. And he gave her his hand and raised her up: and calling the saints and widows, he presented her alive. For those who loved her the joy must have been inexpressible. That God did not raise her solely for their benefit, however, will soon become evident. Peter was prayerful (9:40-41):

42 This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord. God’s greater purpose for raising Dorcas now became clear as word of her return to life became known all over Joppa. God used miracles as confirming signs that the gospel is true. He also used them to authenticate the apostles as His messengers. God used the raising of Dorcas as the spark for the salvation throughout the city. As with the healing of Aeneas, Peter’s ministry bore much fruit. Because of Dorcas’s resurrection, many in Joppa believed in the Lord. It may be affirmed that turning to the Lord, a phrase commonly used in Acts, is synonymous with believing in the Lord. There is no saving faith without conversion, no true belief without repentance and transformation. Peter was fruitful (9:42):

43 Peter stayed in Joppa for some time with a tanner named Simon This footnote serves as a bridge between this passage and the following account of Cornelius’s conversion. Peter decided to remain in Joppa and stayed many days with a certain tanner named Simon. These were challenging days for Peter, as the walls of his lifelong prejudices tumbled down. First came the conversion and Spirit-filling of the Samaritans, with who no self-respecting Jew had any dealings. Yet Peter had been forced to welcome them as brothers in Christ. Soon will come even greater shock, as Gentiles enter the church. In this seemingly insignificant footnote, yet another wall comes down, as Peter stays with a tanner. Tanners were despised in first-century Jewish society, since they dealt with the skins of dead animals. Tanning was thus considered an unclean occupation, and Simon would have been shunned by the local synagogue. Prejudice is devastating to any ministry. There is no place in an effective personal ministry for prejudice. Peter was free from prejudice (9:43):
