Findings In general, the panel was impressed by the quality and the amount of data gathered on the release properties of selected isotopes from various high density uranium carbide targets and ion sources. …it should not be forgotten that in the end it is the total yield of a particular isotope out of a production target that is the ultimate performance measure. A target that has a very small fraction in a very fast release component may not provide the best yield of short-lived isotopes in a production facility. The panel found it difficult to arrive at definitive conclusions on the characteristics of a particular target because of the tendency to have multiple changes in the configuration from one run to the next. The panel was concerned about the appropriateness of the normalization. Mats Lindroos

4. Findings We did, however, feel that there were some tantalizing results that indicated that the target container, target material and ionizer could be arranged to provide faster releases. The panel concluded that more good data is required before making a final conclusion. The high density uranium carbide target has a measured thermal conductivity at elevated temperatures that is claimed to be about a factor of 100 better than that measured for low density uranium carbide. This higher thermal conductivity would permit considerably more power dissipation in the target. The panel realizes that the IRIS facility offers a unique, cost ‐ effective possibility for performing target tests and optimization. Mats Lindroos

5. Recommendations by Review Panel The data analysis of and publications resulting from the IRIS target tests be rechecked for consistency and discrepancies removed. EURISOL continue to support uranium carbide target tests at IRIS. That future target tests at Gatchina be performed in a more coordinated and systematic manner Mats Lindroos

6. Next? Test at ISOLDE with HD UC –The Russian provider, Luch, has asked for an export license and are waiting for a reply from the ministry –The fabrication of thin disks for the ISOLDE tests according to EURISOL specifications have started –Discussions in progress with INTC on the need for a proposal –New test in Gachina?
