ENGLISH I-TUESDAY AUGUST 30 TH Are you a risk taker, or do you like to keep it safe? Explain your answer with an example of a time you either took a risk or played it safe. When you have completed this, take the “Are You a Risk Taker” quiz and read about your score. Agenda Read the background information on Maya Angelou, page 34. Write down what you learn in your own words. Also, what do you think the title means? Be prepared to share with the class/your partner(s). Now, see how many of these literary terms you can define at your table: narrative essay (what does it include), conflict, plot, climax, theme, imagery, and resolution. Read, “New Directions” by Maya Angelou. While reading, take notes on any VIPs you see, (very important parts) and any WWs (weighty words-large or difficult words). Now, answer the following individually, and then discuss with your table: explain the title and describe the theme of this story. Identify one truth Annie Johnson seems to live. Did the truth change between the beginning and the end of the story? If so, how? If not, can you imagine any life situation in which this truth might change for Annie? Choose one person to share one answer or idea you now have.

ENGLISH II-AUGUST 30 TH 2016 What characteristics make us human? Is it our flesh and bones, or something deeper? Explain. What makes a human a hero? Explain with at least five sentences. Don’t forget, at least 5 people have to share for points! Agenda-The learner will review epics and associated terms and content. View PPT and listen to the song (yes, it’s corny) for background info on The Epic of Gilgamesh. Take NOTES! You never know when I will allow you to use them on a test. After viewing the PPT write down what you think the story will be about. As we read, we will pause to discuss and reflect. Also, take note on characters, VIPs (very important parts), weighty words (words you don’t know or words you do know that have an impact), and literary elements. This is called ANNOTATING is VERY IMPORTANT! Literary comic strip Now you will fold a piece of paper into four squares. You will choose four scenes from the text to draw as a comic strip. This means that you add commentary and lots of detail! You will also color these!

ENGLISH III- TUESDAY AUGUST 30 TH What does it mean to be American? Do you identify as American? Why or why not? At least 7 sentences. Agenda- The learner will view various points of view on being an American. View the following videos about various point of views on America and choose the one you identify with. Explain your choice. When you are done, discuss these videos with your table and how each of you feel about America and being American. ENGLISH I-WEDNESDAY AUGUST 31 ST If you could change one thing about the past or present, what would it be and why? Every journal should be at least five sentences! How would a change make it better or worse? Agenda Review notes from 8/30 reading with table and then as class. See if there is anything you missed that a partner has. ENGLISH II-WEDNESDAY AUGUST 31 ST Out of all of your friends, would you say that you are the one who plays it safe, or the one who takes risks? Give me an example and explain why you made your choice. Agenda Quick review from reading on 8/30 with table to see if there is anything you missed. Ask questions if needed. Continue reading The Epic of Gilgamesh as a class. Remember, you should be annotating as you read. VIPs, WWs, characters with short descriptions, and even questions that you have as you read. This REALLY helps the reading process and helps you become a GREAT reader! We will pause occasionally to discuss. Wrap-up: Literary comic strip-Now you will fold a piece of paper into four squares. ELABORATE; GIVE DEATAL AND EXPLANATION! Agenda Yesterday, you guys all shared a pretty positive view on being American. Then, we watched spoken word poets and Ronald Reagan give their points of view. How do various cultures have differing views on America and why do you think this is? Discuss this at your table and summarize your thoughts. Read, Museum Indians on page 35. While reading, write down any metaphors, symbolism, and important characters and their points of view. Also take notes on VIPs (very important parts) and WWs (weighty words that you don’t know, or words that have an impact). Wrap-up: What does it mean to Susan Power, the author, to be Native American? Draw a form of symbolism that represents your view and Susan Powers view of being an American. Don’t forget to Tweet one question you have, one thing you learned, or something that you want/need to learn more about!

ENGLISH I- THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 1 ST : Do you know any ghost stories or have a real supernatural experience of your own? If so, describe it. If not, create a short version of your own. Agenda Read the background information on Joan Aiken on page 47. Then, write your prediction as to what the story will be about. Discuss this with your team members. Read Sonata for Harp and Bicycle on page 48. Remember to annotate! Complete life maps for New If no one has this today, we will postpone it until next week. This means that Tuesday, everyone should be prepared to turn in your current event! You may not get chosen until Thursday to share, but it should still be ready on Tuesday. Tweet!

ENGLISH III SEPTEMBER 1 ST 2016 How is an American identity created and why do people continue to come to America? Do you think that America gets too involved with other countries? How so? Agenda Review notes of Museum Indians at your table and then as a class. Metaphors Similes (sorry, they were in there too) Symbolism Character points of view Weighty words Mini-Project. You have three options: 1. Write a one-page essay about what you have learned about America and being an American. 2. Write a spoken word poem of at least 20 lines on the same topic and preform it to the class (in spoken word format of course). 3. With your team, create a song or rap of at least 20 lyrics/bars to perform for the class (you can even have a beat or tune in the background for this). This is a project grade!! Current Events research. Students will research a topic relevant to current relations. They will write an unbiased summary and then add commentary at the end. They must also cite their source.

ENGLISH II-FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 2 ND Free Write! Write about whatever your heart desires! Just keep it clean! (5) Agenda Go to library to get supplemental reading book! You must show me the book! Book club-students will pre-read books and discuss what they read with their team members. Then, each team must agree on one book. Once decided, this will be our class set for our first novel study. You should read for at least 15 minutes (skip around and take notes if you need to so that you can share what you read). Discuss for 10 minutes and decide on a book!

ENGLISH III- FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 2 ND Free write! Write about whatever your heart desires! Keep it clean! Seven sentences! Agenda Complete mini project and present if applicable. Group book review. Students will take 10 minutes to read their options for this units novel study. Each individual at each table will read a different book and then discuss their thoughts on it. Each table must decide what book they would like to read as a class, or if they would like to complete an independent study with homogenous groups in which they will read what another team is reading and hold table-top discussions about the book with their hetero groups that are reading something different. In this case, the student is only going to be tested on their homogenous groups’ book; however, they will also be graded on the ideas they gather from listening and reading over their other team members books.
