1 Zaha Hadid Modern Architect

2 Biography Zaha Hadid was an Iraqi-born architect known for her radical deconstructivist designs. Hadid began her studies at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon, where she received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. In 1972 she traveled to London to study at the Architectural Association and by 1979 she had formed her own firm there. Hadid’s architectural designs are characterized by a sense of fragmentation, rhythm, and movement. Her first major built project was the Vitra Fire Station (1989–93) in Weil am Rhein, Germany. Composed of a series of sharply angled planes, the structure resembles a bird in flight. Hadid solidified her reputation as an architect of built works in 2000, when work began on her design for a new Lois & Richard Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was the first American museum designed by a woman. She taught architecture at many places, including the Architectural Association, Harvard University, the University of Chicago, and Yale University. Born October 31, 1950, Baghdad, Iraq—died March 31, 2016, Miami, Florida, U.S.

3 Inspiration Kazimir Malevich- Hadid discovered Malevich while attending the Architectural association school in London The style of Suprematism seemed to be the missing piece of her aesthetic puzzle. She loved the abstraction, color blocking, and fragmentation as well as the feeling of weightlessness. Felt that it liberated her from certain dogmas and rules of what architecture was supposed to be.

6 “Architecture is really about well-being. I think that people want to feel good in a space… On one hand it’s about shelter, but it’s also about pleasure.” A usual conflict that designers have is finding the right balance between fashion and function but when its comes to architecture, Hadid believes that feel is equally as important as anything else. “There are 360 degrees. Why stick to one?” Architectural Ideals With this quote Hadid expresses her belief that art (architechure specifically) should not be confined to a set of norms. Regardless if it has always worked one way, it doesn’t mean that it cant be done other way and be better.
