1 Course Overview LIS 4776 Advanced Health Informatics Week 1 Instructor: Dr. Sanghee Oh College of Communication & Information, Florida State University

The instructor will be available for meetings with students by appointment at other times.

5 Health Information Certificate Certificate Requirements Students must take 3 CORE classes and 1 or more electives for completion of the certificate. 6 Course Topics IT ALIGNMENT & STRATEGIC PLANNING: – Understand and designing a strategic plan – Design a record management strategy – Understand IT Governance SYSTEM STANDARDS: – Evaluate PHRs, EMRs, online health information SYSTEM ACQUISITION: – Design a plan to evaluate system needs – Evaluate vendors for the purchase of new technology + Review – Design a project implementation plan SYSTEM IMPLEMENTATION & SUPPORT: – Identify user training needs and designing a plan for training – Determine HIPAA guidelines that apply to HIT – Understand and perform audit trails

7 Course Evaluation Final Exam (25%) (250 pt) Medical Site Visit Report (15%) (150 pt) Two (2) Class Presentations (10%) – Each presentation is worth 5% (50 pt each) Class activities (10%) Reports (50%) – Each report is worth 5% (50 pt each)

8 Class Presentations You will present three times this semester on HIT news. The purposes of the presentation – To engage you in reading HIT news and then processing the information. – To familiarize you with news that will help you in your assignments and with having discussions with potential employers. – To become fluent as discussing HIT issues/challenges/developments.

9 Class Presentations Set a date for your presentations. Everyone needs to share a different article; there will be no repeats. Review the news article and submit a one-page report by a day before your presentation. (Use a template in course Canvas). Post the article link on the HIT Facebook page. You can make a PPT/Prezi presentation OR you can pull up the article on FB and talk about it. Late submission of a written report will be penalized accordingly with 10% deduction from the class presentation grade.

10 Class Presentation Format Minimum=4 min/Maximum=5 minutes per presentation Overview of article What is the main point/ the interesting finding/ the new approach, etc.? So now what – what changes? How does the article impact the way HIT is designed/implemented/applied/planned for, etc. What are the questions you’d like to ask to your classmates? (Prepare at least 2 question)

11 Late Submission Course assignments are typically due by 11:59 p.m. on the due dates indicated in the Course Calendar (unless otherwise stated). Ten percentage-points will be deducted for every day you are late with an assignment or project (e.g., if the total score for the assignment is 10 points, 1 point will be deducted for each day it is late). Assignments submitted two days after the deadline will not be graded.

12 How to Succeed in this Course This is an advanced course, so I expect higher level of student achievement in learning and practice from this course. Actively participate in class discussion and activities. – Be ready to answer questions from the instructor. – Prepare questions you have from class readings, lecture notes, and activities. Attend class all the time. – It is absolutely crucial for students to attend class every day. – The vast majority of report and exam questions are drawn straight from the classes. Read assignment guideline and evaluation criteria thoroughly. – Follow the assignment instruction step by step. – Review your drafts of assignments with the evaluation criteria before submitting them.

13 Class Courtesy Show respect for your classmates and for me, and to assist in the establishment and maintenance of a positive learning environment. Turn off your cell phones and other electronic communication devices before class. Laptop is allowed for note taking or class activities only.
