4 HTCC RESEARCH CONFERENCE The Honors Transfer Council of California (HTCC) will be holding the 17 th annual Student Research Conference, hosted by the University of California, Irvine, on Saturday, April 1 st, 2017. This gives students in community colleges the opportunity to present the results of their work to a community of their peers.

6 HTCC APPLICATION Deadline: Early December Checklist: Personal contact information for all members of your group (Name, Address, Phone, Email, etc.) Do any of your group members plan on attending UCI to pursue an undergraduate degree? Mentor(s) Name and Email Presentation Type (Oral, Poster, Performance) Presentation Title 25 Word Summary 250 Word Abstract Four Academic Sources (cited according to discipline norms)

8 HTCC APPLICATION: FINDING A MENTOR How to: Current professors or professors in discipline of research Email Face to face interaction Include: 1.What HTCC is 2.Why you want to present research 3.Your research ideas/goals 4.Thank them for their time

9 HTCC APPLICATION: PRESENTATION TYPES Research Poster Research posters displayed in the Pacific Ballroom in the Student Center; poster creators are on-hand during designated poster presentation sessions to discuss their research with the public. Individual Oral 12-minute presentation followed by 5 minutes of discussion Small Group Oral 20-minute panel presentation by two presenters, followed by 10 minutes of discussion Large Group Oral 40-minute panel of three or more participants, followed by 10 minutes of discussion Performance Student-created art, music, creative writing, drama, dance performance and incorporating an explicit research component.

10 ABSTRACT WRITING: TITLE Effective two-part title; with catchy primary title and informative subtitle “The Pursuits and Perks of Poverty: The Development of Egalitarian Ideologies in Medieval Europe Through Textiles” “Humanity vs. Wealth: The Psychology of Money” “Real Time News: Social Media Empowers Global Protests” “Pretty Hurts: How Food Coloring Influences the Body and the Mind” “It Takes Two to Talk: The Importance of Social Motivation When learning a Language” “The Republic and The Giver: Observing Injustice through the Lens of Fiction”

11 ABSTRACT WRITING: SUMMARY 25-word limit “Humanity vs. Wealth: The Psychology of Money” “Money doesn’t necessarily bring us happiness, but it does significantly influence our emotions and is a factor in many psychological disorders explored through cognitive biases.” “Pretty Hurts: How Food Coloring Influences the Body and the Mind” “Pretty food comes with a price. Humans use color to measure the desirability of certain foods, and food dyes jeopardize consumer safety by manipulating consumer biology.”

12 ABSTRACT WRITING: BODY 250-word limit 1.Opening sentence provides context and relevance of your project. 2.Logical break between paragraphs; second paragraph demonstrates problem to be addressed. 3.Presents key research concept with citation. 4.Articulates research conclusion and delineates specific solutions. 5.Effective concluding sentence quotes key sources and reiterates.

14 AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS Director’s Scholarship General Award ($1,000) 1 st Place winner for outstanding 400-word Abstract. HTCC Outstanding Abstract Awards ($500) Top 5 exceptional 400-word Abstracts. HTCC Juan Lara Scholarship ($800) Presented to a student nominated by an Honors Coordinator for outstanding growth and academic success in their Honors program. HTCC Exemplary Achievement Awards ($300) Presented to graduating students (nominated by an Honors Coordinator) who have written 500- word essays describing superior achievement or extraordinary improvement through the Honors Program and were. Deadline: March 1, 2017

15 AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS Additional Distinctions Poster Awards (Cash Award) Presented for first, second, or third place winners in both the Social Sciences/Humanities and Physical/Life Sciences Divisions. Abstract for Publication Presenting at the HTCC Conference makes you eligible to submit a 250-word abstract for the publication “Building Bridges,” published through the University of California, Irvine. Due about 2-3 weeks after the conference.

16 TIMELINE Early December, 2016 HTCC application due Late January, 2017 Notification of acceptances of proposals February 1, 2017 RSVP Deadline March 1, 2017 Scholarship applications due Saturday, April 1, 2017 -- Conference Day! April 2017 Abstracts for publication due
