2 2 What is SSHRC? Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. It supports research that is primarily in the social sciences and humanities; it also aims to develop research skills by supporting Canada’s best graduate students in this area. Review the Subject Matter Eligibility section of the SSHRC website to confirm that this is the place for you! 3 3 Funding Opportunities To identify the funding opportunities available through SSHRC, visit the SSHRC home page (http://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca)http://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca Specific awards can then be located by clicking on funding  Talent Program.

4 Awards CGS Master’s Award Program Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) – Master’s Awards Program $17,500 for 12 months, non-renewable MUST be held at the university that offers the SSHRC award. SSHRC Application Deadline: December 1 st, Anually Results: Starting April 1, 2016 *Note: Same application form for SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR Master’s Scholarships.

5 CGS Master’s Awards Program MUST be held at the university which offers the award –You can indicate up to 5 universities on your application (to which you intend to apply/attend). –All of these indicated universities will review your application and, on April 1 st, notify applicants with the results.  Application quotas are provided to each university: UNB’s quota for the 2015-2016 master’s awards program is 13. 5

6 6 Eligibility to Apply – Master’s Eligibility: –be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada; –have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application, between zero and 12 months of full-time graduate studies (or full-time equivalent) –not have previously held a CGS M; –have achieved a first-class average, as determined by the host university, in the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent) (3.7 GPA); and –submit a maximum of one CGS M application per year (the Research Portal will allow the application to be submitted to up to five universities)

7 7 Eligibility to Hold an Award – Master’s Must be registered full-time in a Master’s or a combined undergraduate/graduate program, or in the first year of a combined MA/PhD program in Canada and in a discipline supported by SSHRC. The degree program must include significant research training, as indicated by completion of a thesis, major paper, project, publication, performance or exhibit; methods/statistics coursework; or experience to conduct and interpret research in the field. Award may start in May or Sept 2016 or Jan 2017

8 Selection Criteria CGS-M –Academics (GPA at or above 3.7 each of last two years) (50%) –Research ability and potential (30%) –Communication and leadership skills (20%) 8

10 Doctoral Awards Programs Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) – Doctoral Program $35,000 a year for 36 months Can be held at a recognized Canadian university SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship Program $20,000 a year for up to 48 months Can be held at a recognized university in Canada or abroad Apply for both awards with one application 10

11 Doctoral Awards Programs UNB Faculty/Department Deadline: November 6, 2016 UNB Faculty/Department send Ranked Applications to SGS on: December 1, 2016 UNB SGS Produce University Ranking of Applications by December 21, 2016. Applicants to be forwarded to SSHRC will be notified. UNB Applications are due at SSHRC on January 9, 2017 Results of SSHRC Competition: mid/late April 2017 11

12 Doctoral Awards Programs Application quotas are provided to each university: UNB’s quota for the 2016-17 doctoral awards program is 21. Applications submitted by students are reviewed and ranked by their department/faculty and then by a university committee. The top 18 files will be submitted to SSHRC for the national competition (are not ranked). Direct applications for a Doctoral Award are accepted by SSHRC only from students who are at a university that did not receive a quota (by November 4, 2016). 12

13 13 Eligibility to Apply – Doctoral Must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada Must be applying for support for first PhD Must be applying to ONE tri-council agency only Must not have already received an award at the same level from SSHRC, NSERC, or CIHR Must have completed or are about to complete a Master's degree or a Bachelor's degree in the humanities or social sciences OR Must be already pursuing a PhD degree or equivalent or a combined MA/PhD program An applicant’s year in course is calculated by counting the number of months completed by December 31 of the year of application (rather than at the proposed start date of the award). Must be 40 months or less in a Doctoral program!

15 15 Eligibility to Hold an Award – Doctoral Must be unconditionally admitted to or continuing in a PhD program or a combined MA/PhD program in the social sciences or humanities Must be registered as a full-time student Must be conducting research in an area that falls within SSHRC’s mandate Award may start in May or Sept 2016 or Jan 2017

16 16 Applying For Funding You will need a user ID and a password to access your application. Know what it is; write it somewhere. Print the program description and the instructions for how to complete the application (the application form and the attachments). Click on the Resource Center and the FAQS sections – both contain information that may be helpful. Once you start developing your application, save your work often.

17 17 Applying For Funding You must complete the electronic version of the application and then print a copy for submission. Please sign and date your application before you submit it to your department/faculty. You must include a transcript from UNB and all other institutions; UNB transcript can be unofficial; all other transcripts must be official. You must include two letters of appraisals from referees: Provide them with materials to prepare a strong letter (e.g., CV, transcripts, previous work, and working copy of your program of study)

18 18 Preparing a Program of Study (2 pages max) Clearly state your current level of study; Identify the degree program you will pursue, including relevant courses, and provide an explanation for your choice (e.g., opportunity to work with Dr. X); Give a brief description of your honours and/or Master's research/ program, if applicable; Provide a plan for your research, including the research question(s)/objectives, background, methodology, and a statement about how this work will advance knowledge on the topic

22 22 Tips for Writing A Good Application A good application demonstrates a strong academic record; excellent potential to conduct scholarly research; strong communication skills; and an ability to complete successfully the graduate program in a timely manner. Read the instructions carefully and follow them exactly (e.g., respect page limits). Adhere to format guidelines and use plain language Indicate your proficiency in any language required for your research.

23 23 Tips for Writing A Good Application Include only those research contributions that have been accepted for publication Get feedback from a supervisor and/or others on the program of study; state clearly how your proposed work builds on previous work and why is it important. Start your application when you leave today!
