The Greenhouse Effect & Global Warming
2
Quick Write In this chapter, you will learn about the greenhouse effect and global warming. Write down these questions and answer them in complete sentences. 1. What does a greenhouse do? 2. What is causing the Earth to warm? 3.What can you do to help slow the heating of the Earth?
3
1. Greenhouse effect? The natural heating of Earth’s surface caused by certain atmospheric gases called greenhouse (GH) gases. 2. Global warming? A rise in global temperature.
4
3. How is the AS related to global warming and the GH effect? The AS absorbs solar radiation. Solar radiation comes through the AS, gets reflected, and is trapped on its way back out. Because the heat is trapped in the AS, it keeps the surface warm (GH effect). The more solar radiation trapped in the AS, the warmer it gets (GW). 4. How is solar radiation absorbed? GH gases (H2O (g), CO, CH4, CO2). 2HOCOCHOCO HO = water, CO = carbon monoxide, CH = methane, CO = carbon dioxide
5
Check for Understanding The natural heating of the Earth’s surface is called ______ ______, while the overall temperature increase on Earth is called ______ _______. GW/GE or GE/GW Specifically, how is the heat trapped in the AS? CO2, CH4, CO, and H2O vapor are all called what?
6
5. What does the GE look like? Sketch the diagram:

6. Why is the GH effect important? Life could not exist without it…it would be too cold on the surface. 7. Why is the AS so important to life? It keeps the surface relatively warm and the ozone layer protects living things from UV radiation.
8
8. What are examples of a GH effect that is too much and too little? Too much = Venus (too hot – about 800 degrees C) Too little = Mars (too cold – below 0 degrees very often) 9. How are GW and the GH effect related? The ‘better’ the GH effect, the warmer the planet gets.

Check for Understanding Movie Why is the GE so important to life on Earth? If the GE gets better on Earth, what will happen? Colder or Hotter
