9 Year One phonics screening test In June every Year 1 child will be expected to take part in a phonics screening test. Within school we administer the test in such a way that it is normal for the children and they don’t realise they are being tested. The test consists of real and nonsense (alien) words. The children are expected to sound each word out and then read it. The past few years have seen the National Standard score set at 32/40 words.
