Today our topic of presentation is the University of Tokyo. The University of Tokyo is commonly known as “Todai” in Japan, an abbreviation of the Japanese characters that make up the Japanese name of the university.

It is situated in 5 campuses, the main one being in Hongo, Tokyo, covering 40 hectares. With a history of 134 years, it has developed into one of the first-class universities, ranking 16 in the world,4 in Asia and 1 in Japan. In its each branch of higher learning, it will nurture people of leadership qualities who possess an international character and a pioneering spirit in addition to being equipped with expert knowledge, comprehension powers, insight, practical strengths and imagination. Toward this goal, it will seek the highest standard of education in the world, all the while respecting the individuality of students and their right to learn.

Affected by Japanese’s conscientiousness, Todai has obtained many breakthroughs in various fields. Moreover, its opening to the outside world attracts more and more excellent students all over the world. It is growing stronger and stronger.

Now let me tell you something about the education system. The goals of The University of Tokyo, based on academic freedom, lie in the pursuit of truth, creation of knowledge and maintaining as well as developing the highest level of education and research in the world. Being deeply aware of the influence research can exert on society, the University will strive to secure broad links with society in response to social dynamism, and to contribute to the development of humanity, as well.

The University of Tokyo conducts strictly, regularly and appropriate evaluations of the students’ academic achievements. In addition to self-review of faculty members’ educational activities and various other conditions for education, it will obtain evaluations from both students and appropriate third parties, and will promptly implement these evaluations in the attainment of its educational goals.

The University of Tokyo respects diverse, independent and creative research activities by its constituent members and institutions engaged in seeking truths and creation of knowledge, and aims to pursue research on a par with that of the world’s highest level.

Well, I will say something about the International activities. International activities at the University of Tokyo are intended to ensure that the university is able to thrive in the face of competition from universities within Japan and around the globe, while at the same time benefiting the international community as a whole through collaboration with the world's leading institutions. The University of Tokyo will open its doors on all of its campuses to everyone with suitable qualifications and aptitude for learning. As an institution open to the world, the University of Tokyo hosts students and faculty members from various regions of the globe and also sends its own students abroad and thus build an international network in education.

What’s more, it has educational exchange agreements with Dalian University of Technology in Engineering and Industrial Science. The University of Tokyo has research or educational exchange agreements with 355 institutions (112 with universities, 243 among faculties) around the world as of May 2011.

Then it comes to the most popular part ——scholarship, there are 3 major scholarships international students can apply for. First, the Scholarship of University Special Scholarship for International Students, providing 150 000 yen for students per month. Second, the Japanese Government Scholarship, varying from campuses to campuses. If you apply for it,it is of great importance that which level you belong to. At last, there are the Public Corporation and other scholarships, as long as you make contributions to a certain field,you may have chance to achieve them.

Finally, it’s my turn to introduce the history and honors. The university was founded by the Meiji government in 1877 as the first national university in Japan, It was renamed “the Imperial University” in 1886, and then called Tokyo Imperial University in 1897 when the Imperial University system was created. In 1947, after Japan's defeat in World War II, it re- assumed its original name.

University of Tokyo has produced many notable people, of which 7 persons won the Nobel Prize. Many of its graduates have gone on to become leaders in government, business, and the academic world.here,17 prime ministers in Japan have studied at University of Tokyo. What’s more,its research achievements are wonderful. For example, if you are a fan of Harry Potter, you must remember the clock of invisibility, which used to belong to Harry ’s father. This kind of technology is researched by the professor of Todai.
