6 KY Cooperative Extension Adobe Connect Training, November 10, 2011 History of Extension Agents’ Involvement in Child Care Training FCS agents have provided training for child care providers for many years. Some agents developed training curricula of their own. Agents drew upon their FCS expertise: Child development & guidance, parent & family relations, nutrition & foods, health, financial & household management, clothing, & indoor/outdoor safety.

7 KY Cooperative Extension Adobe Connect Training, November 10, 2011 Extension Offers Its Resources... 1998: Extension offered Office of Early Childhood Development its resources to support new Early Childhood Initiative. 1999: Child Development Specialist hired to create a comprehensive program for all parents of babies and toddlers to supplement HANDS. 2000: Agents and state staff joined five basic work groups to form KIDS NOW.

8 KY Cooperative Extension Adobe Connect Training, November 10, 2011 Keys to Great Parenting and Early Childhood Council Involvement 2000 – 2001: Keys to Great Parenting: Fun and Learning with Your Baby or Toddler was rolled out state-wide. 2000 – present: Agents became active in Community Early Childhood Councils. 2002 – KIDS NOW grant to CES funded training of 120 parent educators, 4000 sets of Spanish Keys, and 5000 sets of 11-inch by 17-inch educational posters.

9 KY Cooperative Extension Adobe Connect Training, November 10, 2011 Forward Into the Future with the Child Care Training Credential… Currently, FCS agents have resumed interest in child care provider training. Several agents and the state child development specialist have already become certified. Numerous other agents have expressed interest in certification. They need more information about the process and how they can use their certification.

Workgroups convened to make recommendations 20-year plan approved by Early Childhood Authority Legislation passed unanimously April 2000 25% of Phase I Tobacco Settlement allotted by legislature
