Helping Students Practice Skills, Strategies, and Processes Bell Ringer : Introduce yourself to your group by stating your name, your school and how long you’ve been teaching. Write what you hope to gain from today’s session. Essential Question : How can I implement engaging, fun, standards-based activities with little to no-prep? Common Language: Cooperative structures: Rally Robin & Quiz, Quiz, Trade, Rally Coach Math vocabulary: product, sum, difference, factors Objective: Through collaboration with colleagues, teachers will be able to increase student engagement and gain fresh activities with little preparation. Agenda: Gradual Release I DO : Explain the directions for the activities. WE DO: Participate in the activities. YOU DO: Share your ideas/thoughts with the group to discuss and prevent roadblocks in implementation. Summarizing Activity: Reflect on today’s activities. Share with your group. Did you reach your goal? Next Steps: Include at least three of the activities into your 2016-2017 lesson plans. Learning Goals: Teachers will be active participants while learning how to incorporate new engaging activities in their classrooms.

6 We will be participating in several group activities today. When I need your attention, I will ask you to make a ….(number). I will hold up some fingers and you will hold up fingers that will either be a factor or addend that will be added or multiplied to my fingers to make a … (number). Example: Make a 10. If I hold up 2 fingers, you may hold up 8 for 8+2=10 or 5 for 5x2=10.

Score 4.0 In addition to level 3.0, teachers will share their knowledge with teachers at their school and adapt the activities for the needs of their students. Score 3.0 The participant, without major errors or omissions, will understand how: To implement at least two cooperative structures into their lessons with their class. To incorporate at least 3 new activities for math or reading with little to no prep. Score 2.0 There are no major errors or omissions regarding the simpler details and processes. The participant will understand how: To implement one cooperative structure with their class To incorporate at least 2 new activities for math or reading. Score 1.0 With help, a partial understanding of some of the simpler details and processes and some of the more complex ideas and processes. The participant will understand: 2 cooperative structures that may be used in the classroom

8 Cooperative Structures Rally Robin students paired with a partner 1 question with multiple correct answers Quiz, Quiz, Trade a question/answer card for every student students mix & pair up with a new partner every time Rally Coach students paired with a partner multistep problems partners take turns coaching & praising
