WHO IS MRS. SMITH? Math degree from the UW Played soccer at the UW Married (26 years!), three kids –live in the Everett School District Have a 5-year old lab mix Enjoy working out and cooking 14 th year at EWHS – GO WARRIORS! 3 rd year teaching IB math

Materials to Bring to Class Spiral Notebook or composition book– graph paper spirals or composition books are ideal! Place to store handouts, paper, pencil – the usual Calculator (Graphing – TI-83, TI-84 or TI-84 Plus, TI Inspire) Charged Chromebook

What is Math Studies? We will be: Studying topics from algebra – linear, quadratic, and exponential models Geometry – right triangle ratios, surface area and volume of three-dimensional solids, finding angle measures

What is Math Studies? We will also be studying: statistics – graphical representations of one variable and two variable statistics, measures of central tendency, correlation, the normal distribution Probability An introduction to differential calculus Logic

What is IB Math Studies? The course will be based upon the IB Diploma Program Mathematics Studies Standard Level textbook There is a formal IB Exam in May – required to sit through (80% of IB grade) + an internal assessment (20% of IB grade)

That said… My hope is that you will find this class to be an opportunity to ask questions and explore very relevant and exciting mathematics in a safe environment.

Yet… Leave feeling confident enough to take mathematic or science courses at the university level...

Goal: Build the Tallest Freestanding Structure You will be working in your group The entire marshmallow must be on top Use as much or as little of the kit – string, tape, and 20 spaghetti sticks Break up the spaghetti, string or tape – create new structures The challenge will last 18 minutes…

Grading Categories Classwork + Checkpoint quizzes (20% semester 1; 10 % semester 2) – Checkpoint Quiz (5 points), Group problems and investigations + problem presentations (5 points) Tests/Quizzes (70%) Internal Assessment (10% semester 1; 20% semester 2)

Homework Suggested homework problems from the textbook will be assigned with each lesson Written out solutions to these problems are located on IB Math SL website Most homework will be tied to the IA

Class Work Problems assigned as class work are designed to either 1) promote higher level thinking and connections between topics, 2) serve as application problems, 3) provide review, 4) provide practice for your internal assessment.

Class Work Class work is scored based on completion and presentations of your group’s worked out solutions Class work can vary each day and is dependent on that day’s lesson Worth up to 5 points If a student is absent for the class work, the grade will be coded as ABS

Checkpoint Quiz Given after presentations of the worked out class work All students will be expected to complete the checkpoint quiz but only one paper in each group will be scored. If a student is absent for the checkpoint quiz, the grade will be coded as ABS

Tests/Quizzes Quizzes (20-40 points) Tests (60-100 points) – One at end of each unit. No retakes. No notecards. You will use the IB Math Studies list of approved formulas.

Tests/Quizzes Plan on making-up quizzes within one week and before the test You can expect to make-up quizzes the next class period Plan on making-up tests within two weeks of the scheduled test.
