Plot Summary Giving a summary of what the book is about. Start with the details of books, who are the characters, what is the setting. Then look at details about the conflict—what was the problem in the story. Then give details about the resolution An easy way to put it together is in a mind map.
13
Creating a Plot Summary Mind Map Take all of the information from the plot that you have and create a mind map. (see example below) Title of Story Setting Conflict Resolution Characters Setting Details: 1_________ 2_________ 3_________ Setting Details: 1_________ 2_________ 3_________ Main Characters: 1_________ 2_________ 3_________ Supporting Characters: 1._________ 2._________ 3._________ Main Characters: 1_________ 2_________ 3_________ Supporting Characters: 1._________ 2._________ 3._________ Resolution Details: Conflict Details:

Putting the information into summary Once you have all of the details, pick out the most important and put it in a summary. Example: Let’s look at the book The Giver by Lois Lowry

Example Mind Map—The Giver Title of Story Setting Conflict Resolution Characters Setting Details: Contained community, futuristic, dystopia Setting Details: Contained community, futuristic, dystopia Main Characters: 1.Jonas 2.The Giver Supporting Characters: 1 Lily (sister) 2 Gabriel (baby) 3. Example plot summary-The Giver Based on our mind map our summary might look like this… In a small dystopian community, Jonas is given the job of Receiver of memory. Jonas is now in charge of these memories and it learning the hard truth about his idyllic community. This bothers him greatly because he wants to share his new knowledge with everyone in the community. Jonas escapes to a new place “elsewhere” to protect himself and those he loves.
