Do You Know Your Biomes?
2
This biome is the…..
3
And this one…
4
What about these guys?
5
And these?
6
The biome here is called
7
Glaciers and Permafrost highlight this biome…
8
Major inhabitants of this biome
9
Don’t forget about….
10
The Key 1.Desert 2.Taiga- Coniferous forest 3.Tropical Rainforest 4.Marine aquatic biome 5.Grassland 6.Tundra 7.Deciduous Forest 8.Freshwater aquatic biome
11
Major Biomes 8 main biomes exist in the world Each biome is defined by abiotic factors such as temperature and water
12
Tundra
13
Mainly located in the northern tips of North America, Europe and Asia Abiotic factors - permafrost in soil - low rainfall - extreme temperatures below freezing - strong winds - long periods of darkness or sunlight (solstice) Biotic factors - small shrubs, lichen, sedges and short grasses - caribou, polar bears, arctic foxes, lemmings, snowy owls
14
Boreal Forest (Taiga)
15
Known for bitter cold winters, and summers long enough to thaw and grow vegetation Abiotic factors - moderate rainfall - extreme cold, moderate warmth, high humidity - nutrient poor soil Biotic factors - needleleaf trees - coniferous trees (cone bearing), spruce, fir, evergreen - lynxes, wolves, moose, beavers, songbirds
16
Deciduous Forest
17
Located in various regions along western U.S. coast, east and southeast, most of Europe, parts of Japan, China and South Africa Abiotic factors - dry warm summers, cool moist winters - moderate to fertile soil - year-round rainfall (moderate) - periodic fires Biotic factors - woody leathery leafed trees - deciduous leaf shedding trees - flowering shrubs and herbs - mosses and ferns - hemlock, redwood, oak, birch - deer, grizzly bears, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, hawks, quail, snakes, butterflies
18
Grassland
19
Grassland (Savannah) Located in central and midwestern North America Savannah regions located closer to equator Largest terrestrial biome Abiotic factors - warm to hot summers, cold winters - moderate seasonal rainfall - fertile soils - occasional fires Biotic factors - lush perennial grasses - herbs - food crops like corn, wheat, rye - drought tolerate trees and shrubs - coyotes, badgers, wolves, antelopes, prairie dogs, owls, chickens - lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, zebra, hyenas, rhinoceros
20
Tropical Rain Forest
21
Tropical Rainforest Located in Central and Southern South America, parts of Africa, Australia Most diverse wildlife of all biomes Abiotic factors - hot, humid, wet year-round - thin nutrient poor soil - plentiful rainfall Biotic factors - broad leafy towering trees - canopy and understory - ferns - climbing vines and plants - orchids - diverse insect population - sloths, anteaters - toucans, parrots, parakeets - crocodiles, alligators, pythons, boa constrictors
22
Desert
23
Located North Africa, West to South western United States, Mexico, Australia Abiotic factors - extreme temperatures between day and night - low rainfall - rich mineral soil, sand, poor organic material Biotic factors - cacti, brush, tumbleweeds, shrubs - bighorn sheep, kangaroo rats, jackrabbits, bats, owls, roadrunners, tortoises, rattlesnakes, lizards, scorpions
24
Aquatic Biomes 75% of the Earth is covered by water Aquatic biomes are characterized also by abiotic factors such as: - depth - distance from the shore - flow - temperature - composition of the water
25
Freshwater Biome
26
Divided by flowing water systems versus standing or still water Flowing water systems – rivers, streams, and creeks Abiotic factors - large amounts of oxygen from moving water - plentiful sunlight - loosened leached soil from erosion Biotic factors - limited plant life in turbulent waters - catfish, turtles, beavers, otters
27
Freshwater Biomes Standing water systems- lakes, ponds, wetlands (bog, marshes, swamps) Abiotic factors - less dissolved oxygen - stagnant water - plentiful sunlight Biotic factors - planktonic organisms (phyto and zoo) - frogs, dragonflies, mosquitoes, ducks, alligators
28
Marine Biome
29
Divided into zones based on depth and distance from the shore Aphotic versus photic – depth which sunlight can penetrate the water Intertidal – zone or line between high tide and low tide Continental shelf – coastal zone that surrounds most continents Open ocean – out beyond other zones into the vast depths of the ocean
30
Marine Biome Abiotic factors - sunlight for photosynthesis except below aphotic zone - plentiful amounts of dissolved oxygen - temperature adjusts with proximity to the Equator Biotic factors - seaweeds, coral reef inhabitants, flowing algae - dolphins, whales, sea lions, tropical fish, lobsters, crabs, jellyfish, octopus,
