Reader’s Workshop “Just Right” Books 2 Levels: - Independent Level - Instructional Level

Reading Incentives “Get Comfy with Reading!” - Read 100 books by 12/23 “Reading Is Cool!” - Read for 15 minutes per night for 5 nights. Runs for approx. 12 weeks!

Fairy Tales Unit Origin/history of folktales and fairy tales. Adaptations of Cinderella stories from around the world. Fractured fairy tales. Plays to promote fluency and expression.

Word Study Phonics, Sorting, and Spelling. Skill-based groups. New words each Monday with quiz each Friday.

Writers’ Workshop Independent writing skills. One-on-one conferencing. Take writing from “sloppy copy” to publishing. Students share their work with the class.

Designed to give students a deeper understanding of math. Build on what they learn year after year to ensure deeper understanding. Curriculum goes past facts and formulas, teaching students to think about the concepts of math. Save the Date… Special Parents Math Night: September 29 th …6:30pm

Black History Museum Social Studies Curriculum. Group oriented. Introduction to research. Incorporates Language Arts skills. Presentation in museum form. Public speaking experience.

Standards Based Report Cards (Report Card Parent Night: Oct.20 th ) What are they? Research based Provides specific feedback to students, parents, and teacher about student progress Disentangles learning behaviors and effort from progress toward academic goals Promotes consistency in grading within a grade level and between grade levels Helps focus instruction and assessment How will they be different? We will have four marking periods with mid-marking period reports being only issued to students who’s progress is of concern No overall subject grades Grade is not an average of performance Proficiency on specific objectives will be identified Effort and behavior will be assessed separately Teachers will use rubrics to identify levels of proficiency for each standard

Homework & Testing Math, Word Study, and Reading. Approx. 20 minutes per night. Approx. every 2 weeks tests sent home for review – sign and return folder and contents. All tests returned to parents at the end of each marking period.
