PROJECT SCHEDULING Presented by: G. Dudley Smith, PE Construction Bureau
2
www.smithcurrie.com INTRODUCTION ALDOT Traditional Scheduling 108.03 requires a “satisfactory, comprehensive bar graph schedule of operations/activities (Form C-10). Why? Ensure Contractor has planned project activities over time.
3
www.smithcurrie.com EXAMPLE C-10 $50M I/D Project 34 Total Activities Shortest Duration = 1 Month Longest Duration = 16 Months Total Duration = 3.5 years
4
EXAMPLE C-10
6
www.smithcurrie.com C-10 CHALLENGES Simply not enough detail No updates Activities durations in months No logic ties between activities No resources (materials, labor, equipment and costs) Doesn’t identify the “controlling item of work” or “critical path” Limited production information
7
www.smithcurrie.com CRITICAL PATH METHOD (CPM) CPM Scheduling is one of the most frequently used construction planning techniques. What is CPM Scheduling? The sequence of construction activities which add up to the longest overall duration or the shortest time possible to complete the project. Software performs this calculation.
8
www.smithcurrie.com CPM SOFTWARE Options Include: Primavera (P6) Microsoft Project Suretrak Timberline NUMEROUS OTHERS
9
www.smithcurrie.com ALDOT’S CPM Currently being used on a limited basis. CBD Phase II (current project) CBD Phase III (Nov. letting) Mobile Bay Bridge (future project in ???)
10
www.smithcurrie.com CPM OVERVIEW CBD Phase II: SP 12-1610 Unlimited Activities – CBD has 6,200 All have a predecessor and successor All contractual Milestones & Phases input Constraints not allowed
11
www.smithcurrie.com CPM OVERVIEW CBD Phase II: SP 12-1610 Logic Ties Finish to Start (FS), most common Start to Start (SS), rare Start to Finish (SF), rare Finish to Finish (FF), rare

13
www.smithcurrie.com CPM ADVANTAGES Multiple Project Schedules Baseline – substantial detail of Contractor’s original plan Monthly updates – compared to baseline and previous monthly updates As-built – compared to baseline and any monthly update
14
MONTHLY UPDATE VS BASELINE SCHEDULE
15
www.smithcurrie.com CPM ADVANTAGES Unlimited filtering/sorting of activities based on WBS and resources input. WBS = Work Breakdown Structure Submittal Review/Approval Procurement/Fabrication/Delivery Construction/Installation Change Orders/SA’s/CR’s Phase of Work Responsibility

www.smithcurrie.com CPM ADVANTAGES Time Extensions easier to resolve Delay/Claim impacts are more easily identifiable than using “Controlling Item of Work” (challenging to define on larger projects) Can use to plan CE&I staff needed Can use to justify the monthly billing if cost loaded
23
www.smithcurrie.com CPM DISADVANTAGES Knowledgeable Staff Required Must review numerous schedules/project Confirm it matches the daily reports, progress of work, etc. Expenses/Costs
24
www.smithcurrie.com CPM DISADVANTAGES Primavera Costs $4K/License (Gov Agencies get a 50% discount) Schedule Analyzer $2K/License Software Training$2K/Trainee TOTAL = $8K
25
www.smithcurrie.com ALDOT’S CPM FUTURE Possible Usage: Time Sensitive Projects I/D Projects Projects > $25M If used, at minimum: One ALDOT Area employee trained Area will have a software license
26
www.smithcurrie.com CONCLUSION Advantages of schedule benefits outweigh the costs Will aid ALDOT in completing projects in a timely manner Will assist in delay/claim issues Beneficial tool on mega and time sensitive projects
