Welcome to Cloud Computing. The Internet of People and Things. An Introduction to Cloud Computing: The Internet. Presenter: Roy McCollum The cloud image has been used for many years to represent the abstract collection of computers, software and services available to folks using their personal electronic devices to attach to the growing complex structure that has become known as; “The Internet“ aka “The Cloud”.

Cloud computing consist of entrusted remote services with a user's data, software and computation. Where is your data? Is it protected? The cloud’s services affect your finances, your income, your career, your business, and your health these days. Your government is out there, communicate with it. Regardless of your age or education the cloud lets you connect to the libraries of the world, your financial institutions, your healthcare, friends, entertainment, business projection, etc. You may find a new career path, a missing branch of your family tree, how to program, free education, an answer to a health issue, a new hobby, etc. As with the clouds in our southwestern sky, cloud computing can take on many forms and colors.

So what is it that makes up the Cloud (Internet) these days? What’s going on within it and how does it affect me?

This explain it? Mmmm, probably not… But elements indicated are part of the Cloud’s services.

Some Things that are connected to the Cloud. Look around you and meet some of the People.

Typical cloud users environment of computing things theses days. Yes, No, Maybe?

The wired RJ-45 connector, your interface to the cloud? Possibly…

Wireless? Or the data center of the future?

The Cloud is still quite grounded to its need of power and communications links.

Where do you fit into the cloud?

A typical large scale data-center.

Typical infrastructure found today but being moved to the Cloud.

Data-centers, large or small, demand care and feeding by People.

One of Microsoft’s data-centers. How many career fields do you recognize?

Did I mention communications bandwidth so you can connect to your data?

Many times the data-center you connect to is connected to an upstream data-center. Or the type of service you utilize may route you to an edge DC for better content delivery. This type of diagram can be used to indicate redundant DCs for disaster planning needs of an organization or service provider. IaaS is a commodity that will need to be considered in Service Level Agreements (SLA). PaaS will also be a factor in your SLA. SaaS is also an SLA element when signing up your organization or yourself as the end user.

Who are some of the players in the Cloud that provide the varied XaaS features that you or your organization may desire or require? And let us not forget SECURE computing demands and requirements.

Computing power increases while physical size decrease, thus allowing for BIG DATA. What is Big Data? Stuff about you, family, business info, climate, energy, health, cost, manufacturing, education, research, money, nature, communications, arts, entertainment, food production, pollution, medicine, disease control, terrorism, and the list grows… See any careers therein? All this growth demands a better educational system with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

More data equals more data-center demand and more people for care and feeding. What is your data worth? As an individual, company or government?

Where is your data and what happens to your business and daily life without it today?

“Location, Location, Location”, holds true in the development of international DCs.

Power, bandwidth, people, terrestrial stability: just some of the DC demands.

I want my data now!! Demands on the local providers also is required of the Cloud customer. Can you get cost effective bandwidth from your home or office?

Some of the providers at different service levels of the Cloud. What’s missing in this picture?

With so many wanting, using and touching the Cloud, it requires an ever increasing demand for secure computing, yet another growing career field. Computer forensics has become a growing field in law enforcement. Constant monitoring of data flowing into and out of a DC is always a task at hand.

What is the weakest link in cloud security? The end user; sniffing, spoofing, weak passwords, lack of understanding, complacency, internal threats, etc… What is your data worth?

Generally most DCs are quite secure. Biometric monitoring, password strength forced, video surveillance, triple redundancy in equipment, power, communications, etc... Audits of functionality, continuous education, etc…

Hmmmm… Questions??

The International Network of People and Things An Introduction to Cloud Computing: The Internet. The cloud scribble has been used for many years to represent the abstract collection of computers, software and services available to PEOPLE using their personal electronic THINGS to attach to the growing complex structure that has become known as "The Internet". Cloud computing consist of entrusted remote services with a user's data, software and computation. Where is your data? Is it protected? Have questions about the cloud that affects your finances, your income, your career, your business, and your health? Your government is out there, communicate with it. Regardless of your age or education the cloud lets you connect to the libraries of the world, your financial institutions, your healthcare, friends, entertainment, business projection, etc. Want a better understanding of the cloud? Check into public library’s services for a better understanding of Cloud Computing. You may find a new career path, a missing branch of your family tree, how to code, vast educational resources, an answer to a health issue, a new hobby, etc. As with the clouds in our southwestern sky, cloud computing can take on many forms and colors. Clear away the fog with an improved understanding and define what your cloud computing experience will become. * 35+ years of involvement in the information systems and technology cloud. Questions?
