CACHE Level 2 Intro to Early Years Education © Hodder & Stoughton Limited Starter activity 3. Be able to respond to inappropriate behaviour (3.1) Time: 15 mins Write down all the words you have ever heard to describe a child demonstrating inappropriate behaviour. For example: Naughty Bad Silly Idiot How would these words make a child feel?

CACHE Level 2 Intro to Early Years Education © Hodder & Stoughton Limited All children will demonstrate some form of inappropriate behaviour at some point. This behaviour will vary according to the age and stage of the child. A 2-year-old may stamp, cry and shout because they cannot get their own way, but this is often expected at this stage of development. An older child might act in a silly way, but they may just be testing an adult to see what they can get away with. 3. Be able to respond to inappropriate behaviour (3.1) Inappropriate behaviour

CACHE Level 2 Intro to Early Years Education © Hodder & Stoughton Limited The expectations on behaviour will be set by the policies and procedures of the setting. Any child or adult who behaves in a way that goes against these policies and procedures will be demonstrating inappropriate behaviour. This behaviour can come in many forms including verbal, physical, written or threatening others. 3. Be able to respond to inappropriate behaviour (3.1) Inappropriate behaviour

CACHE Level 2 Intro to Early Years Education © Hodder & Stoughton Limited Pairs activity Time: 15 mins Discuss two situations where you have seen a child or children demonstrating inappropriate behaviour. Consider: Physical – hitting, biting or kicking Verbal – using inappropriate language Threatening – non-verbal gestures and body language Written – for older children this can include social media Have you seen different behaviours from different age ranges? 3. Be able to respond to inappropriate behaviour (3.1)

CACHE Level 2 Intro to Early Years Education © Hodder & Stoughton Limited You will need to report any incidents of inappropriate behaviour within the setting. If you have not been told how to do this or who to tell, then you should speak to your supervisor. Practitioners within the setting will be with the children every day, so they will have a better picture of the child’s overall behaviour. What you see may be an isolated incident, but the child’s key person will need to know so that they can monitor the child’s behaviour. 3. Be able to respond to inappropriate behaviour (3.2) Reporting inappropriate behaviour

CACHE Level 2 Intro to Early Years Education © Hodder & Stoughton Limited The setting will have policies and procedures on how to deal with inappropriate behaviour. It is very important that there is a consistent approach to this. It is good practice to observe practitioners to see how they deal with inappropriate behaviour, and this will maintain a consistent approach. 3. Be able to respond to inappropriate behaviour (3.3) Strategies for dealing with inappropriate behaviour

CACHE Level 2 Intro to Early Years Education © Hodder & Stoughton Limited There are many strategies for dealing with inappropriate behaviour. The practitioner must decide which one is most appropriate according to the age and stage of the child and the current situation. Body language – a sad face or folded arms and a stare can tell a child how you are feeling. Time out – this gives the child a chance to be away from the situation and to think about their actions. 3. Be able to respond to inappropriate behaviour (3.3) Strategies for dealing with inappropriate behaviour

CACHE Level 2 Intro to Early Years Education © Hodder & Stoughton Limited Consequences – if a child learns what the outcome of their behaviour will be, it will make them think before they behave that way again. Ignoring – some behaviour is attention-seeking, and this is common with very young children. If it is ignored it may stop, but abusive or dangerous behaviour should never be ignored. Removal – taking a toy or a piece of equipment away can often break a behaviour pattern. 3. Be able to respond to inappropriate behaviour (3.3) Strategies for dealing with inappropriate behaviour

CACHE Level 2 Intro to Early Years Education © Hodder & Stoughton Limited No – this can be effective with young children, especially if used with appropriate body language. If this word is overused, it becomes meaningless. Distraction – this can work very effectively with young children. They may be having a tantrum or getting cross, and if an adult starts talking about or playing with another toy, then this distracts the child from their initial behaviour. 3. Be able to respond to inappropriate behaviour (3.3) Strategies for dealing with inappropriate behaviour

CACHE Level 2 Intro to Early Years Education © Hodder & Stoughton Limited Group activity Time: 15 mins Discuss the strategies used for dealing with inappropriate behaviour within your setting. Consider: The age and stage of the children Dealing with aggression Responding to inappropriate language Managing conflict Which strategy works the best? Which ones have you used? 3. Be able to respond to inappropriate behaviour (3.3)

CACHE Level 2 Intro to Early Years Education © Hodder & Stoughton Limited You will need to show that you recognise inappropriate behaviour and that you know how to deal with it. It is always important to be consistent in your approach and follow the policies and procedures of the setting. Reflecting on your own role will enable you to identify your strengths. It will also enable you to identify any areas that you feel you need further support in. 3. Be able to respond to inappropriate behaviour (3.1, 3.2, 3.3) Strategies for dealing with inappropriate behaviour

CACHE Level 2 Intro to Early Years Education © Hodder & Stoughton Limited Reflection activity Time: 15 mins Do you feel you can deal with all types of behaviour? Consider: An 18-month-old is biting another child and will not let go A child uses a racist word A 3-year-old comes up and kicks you every morning Two children always run for the same bike and have the same argument every day A group of 6-year-olds are surrounding a younger child in the playground What type of behaviour do you think is the most difficult to manage? Why? 4. Be able to reflect on own role in relation to managing children’s behaviour in own setting (4.1)

CACHE Level 2 Intro to Early Years Education © Hodder & Stoughton Limited Classroom discussion activity Time: 15 mins Discuss a situation where you have effectively managed inappropriate behaviour. Consider: The age and stage of the child The type of behaviour Policies and procedures of the setting How did you know what to do? How do you know you were effective? 4. Be able to reflect on own role in relation to managing children’s behaviour in own setting (4.1)

CACHE Level 2 Intro to Early Years Education © Hodder & Stoughton Limited Extension activity Time: 15 mins Explain what you would tell a new student about dealing with inappropriate behaviour within the setting. Consider: The age and stage of the children The policies and procedures of the setting What is considered as inappropriate behaviour Strategies for dealing with specific types of behaviour What would be your best bit of advice for this student? Why? 3. Be able to respond to inappropriate behaviour (3.3)

CACHE Level 2 Intro to Early Years Education © Hodder & Stoughton Limited Summary It is important to know what is considered as inappropriate behaviour within the setting. Strategies used to manage behaviour must be age and stage appropriate. Reflecting on your own role will enable you to identify your strengths, as well as areas for development.

CACHE Level 2 Intro to Early Years Education © Hodder & Stoughton Limited 1.List five examples of inappropriate behaviour. 2.For each example given, explain a strategy for dealing with it. 3.Why is it important to reflect on your own role? Plenary
