2 Safe Schools / Healthy Students Referrals Our referral system is the backbone of our program Over 600 referrals for mental health and substance abuse counseling More than the entire student population of an elementary school

3 Services Provided Individual and family counseling Psychological evaluations to identify mental health diagnoses / obstacles Psychiatric evaluations to assess medications Substance abuse evaluations to determine chemical abuse or dependency Alcohol & drug education classes Intensive Outpatient Treatment

4 My son has absolutely come a long way with counseling. … As of now, his attitude has changed drastically for the better.

5 FAST Families and Schools Together Family Strengthening Program Pre-K FAST and Kids FAST completed at 9 schools so far Total of 134 families have completed the programs representing a total of 630 people affected by the programs Will add 5 cycles next spring included a Junior High FAST Schools include Rawhide, Meadowlark, Rozet, Hillcrest, Cottonwood, Lakeview, Sunflower, Ready 4 Learning, Wagonwheel, Twin Spruce

6 FAST successes 28% increase in Kindergarten readiness skills 25% increase in family functioning skills

7 At first he said, “Mom, I don’t want to go to school.” After FAST I had no issues with getting him to go to school! Awesome program, I would recommend it to anyone!

8 Olweus Bullying Prevention Program In 2009, 38% of junior & senior high students reported being harassed or bullied in school (Youth Risk Behavior Survey) Currently running the program in 7 elementary schools and one junior high school (Conestoga, Prairie Wind, Rawhide, Sunflower, Meadowlark, Cottonwood, Sunflower, Sage Valley)

9 Student Resource Officers The Gillette Police Department has a total of 4 School Resource Officers In 2009-2010 the SROs answered 868 calls for service The Safe Schools / Healthy Students grant provides 1 SRO for the junior high schools Due to the success of having an SRO dedicated to the junior high level, the City of Gillette added another SRO position for that level

10 Diversion & Early Age Intervention Provides an alternative to criminal prosecution Instructs participants in Corrective Thinking classes to change problematic thinking patterns Last year there were 82 students served through Diversion (ages 13-18) and 26 through Early Age Intervention (ages 5-12)

11 Social Norms Marketing Marketing campaign to reduce underage drinking Uses positive messages that capture the spirit of the student body In 2009-2010, campaign was implemented at Campbell County High School Expanding to the junior highs in 2010-2011 Campaign elements: Texting to students, mobile billboard, posters Campaign targeting parents: newspaper, radio, direct mail

14 YES House ACE/PACE: After school program, especially beneficial for students who have trouble succeeding in other after school programs Day Treatment: Outpatient care for students dealing with mental health and substance abuse barriers

15 Support & Therapy Groups Anger Management Children of Incarcerated Parents Children of Divorce Bullying

17 17 Changes Among Youth (Pre/Post): Percent of Youth Who Engaged in Bullying Behavior There were also significant decreases in bullying behavior among youth participating in targeted interventions.

18 18 Changes Among Youth (Pre/Post): Percent of Youth Who Fought or Encouraged Violence Youth reported engaging in less violence and were less likely to encourage other students to fight.

19 19 22% reduction in depressive symptoms from pre- and post-survey responses

20 20 % of CCSD High School Youth Who Reported Feeling Depressed and Considering/ Planning/Attempting Suicide (YRBS) There has been a slight decrease in the percent of CCSD high school students who reported feeling sad and considered, planned, and attempted suicide from 2007 to 2009.
