What is a political party? It is a group of voters who agree on how to run government and other issues. The United States has a two party system. In most elections there are only two parties represented. The two major political parties in the U. S. 1.The Democratic Party 2.The Republican Party

Democrats and Republicans What do they believe about government? Democrats favor a larger central government that is more directly involved with the economy, education, and providing people jobs. Republicans favor a smaller central government. They believe that less government regulations will stimulate the economy and create jobs.

Third Parties Third Parties show up when Americans are unhappy with the two major parties. A third party candidate has never won a presidential election, but they can change the outcome of elections. Third parties often focus on one issue or candidate.

Other Party Systems Multi Party System – A system where there are several parties. In these countries, one party rarely ever hold enough power to control the government. –Example: Israel has 20 political parties. One Party System – A system in which one party controls the government. –Example: A. China – Communist B. Iran – Islamic
