3. Mention Whistler in British Columbia, Canada, and most people will picture the ski resort or the titular village that hosts the resort. But it’s the mountain itself that first drew people here. Initially, European settlers named the peak London Mountain, for a mining claim. But when the ski resort was founded in the 1960s, the more whimsical name – Whistler – was adopted as a nod to the mountain’s population of marmots, aka whistle pigs.
