A Look At Persuasive Writing, Ethos, Logos and Pathos

Persuasive Writing is any kind of writing that attempts to persuade a reader to feel a certain emotion, or to support a certain kind of idea. It can also be used to convince people to buy a certain product or vote for a particular candidate (in the form of advertisements) WHAT IS PERSUASIVE WRITING?

When creating persuasive writing, authors should be aware of the three different forms of persuasive devices: 1.Ethos 2.Pathos 3.Logos THE 3 PERSUASIVE DEVICES

Ethos is the way that an author shows credibility in persuasive writing. Usually applied to a person’s character. In advertisements, you will usually see the face of a celebrity or other credible figure to make the product or idea seem credible. In longer pieces, authors will try to sound unbiased, introduce their own expertise, and use language that caters to their target audience. ETHOS

Pathos applies to the emotions. In advertisements like this, you will often see images that prompt you to feel a certain way, when you read the words. In longer pieces, authors will talk about emotional experiences, use emotional language, and provide examples that instill emotion. PATHOS

Logos is the use of logic or reasoning to persuade someone to believe something. In ads, you will see a list of facts about all the benefits of an item. In longer pieces, authors use facts (sometimes historical), analogies and logical arguments. LOGOS

“Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there: fathers and sons; mothers and daughters; husbands and wives; boyfriends; girlfriends; old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of love or revenge- they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that love actually is all around.” -David, Love Actually (2008) Would you call this logos, ethos or pathos? EXAMPLES IN MENTOR TEXTS

“Historical Fact: people stopped being human in 1913. That was the year Henry Ford put his cars on rollers and made his workers adopt the speed of the assembly line. At first, workers rebelled. They quit in droves, unable to accustom their bodies to the new pace of the age. Since then, however, the adaptation has been passed down: we’ve all inherited it to some degree, so that we plug right into joysticks and remotes, to repetitive motions of a hundred kinds. But in 1922 it was still a new thing to be a machine.” -p.95, Middlesex, by Jeffrey Eugenides Do you think that this is logos, ethos or pathos? EXAMPLES FROM MENTOR TEXTS

(Speaker is the owner of a fraudulent pharmaceutical company being interviewed by Max Brooks) “Do you understand economics? I mean big-time, prewar, global capitalism? Do you get how it worked?... There are no rules, no scientific absolutes. You win, you lose…. The only rule that ever made sense to me I learned from a history, not an economics, professor at Wharton. “Fear,” he used to say, “fear is the most valuable commodity in the universe.” That blew me away. “Turn on your TV,” he’d say. “What are you seeing? People selling their products? No. People selling the fear of you having to live without their products.”… Fear of aging, fear of loneliness, fear of poverty, fear of failure. Fear is the most basic emotion we have. Fear is primal. Fear sells.” -p.54-55, World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, Max Brooks Do you think this is logos, ethos, or pathos?
