CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator LO3 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to provision for physical development for children from birth to 7 years. AC 3.1 Identify resources for children in relation to supporting physical development. AC 3.2 Explain the role of physical development in a child’s learning. AC 3.3 Reflect on strategies to promote physical development. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Starter activity LO3 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to provision for physical development for children from birth to 7 years [AC 3.1] Time: 15 mins How physically active are you? Consider: Do you choose to walk short distances or do you always look for a lift? Do you play any regular sport? Do you enjoy dancing? Are you a busy bee or a couch potato? How do you feel after you have taken part in a physical activity such as a brisk walk? © Hodder & Stoughton Limited

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Resources to support physical development Physical development can be split in to fine motor and gross motor skills. A range of activities and experiences in both areas will support children’s physical development. Children should be stretched and challenged in their physical skills. Physical skills can be developed in both indoor and outdoor play. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO3 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to provision for physical development for children from birth to 7 years [AC 3.1]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Group activity Time: 15 mins Create a list of activities, experiences and resources that can support physical development in the setting. Consider: Fine motor skills Gross motor skills Indoor area Outdoor area The age and stage of the children. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO3 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to provision for physical development for children from birth to 7 years [AC 3.1]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator The role of physical development in children’s learning Children’s physical development will support them in all areas of learning. Children will learn to problem-solve when trying to negotiate obstacles in the outdoor area. Social skills will be developed when children are playing together with a ball or bean bag. Children will need to master fine motor skills when they are learning to feed themselves or brush their teeth. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO3 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to provision for physical development for children from birth to 7 years [AC 3.2]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator The role of physical development in children’s learning When babies first start to crawl or move around the room they will learn how to explore their environment. Children can learn to express themselves through music and movement activities. Activities that promote fine motor skills such as threading or sorting will enable children to learn how to control small objects, this will support them when they learn to write. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO3 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to provision for physical development for children from birth to 7 years [AC 3.2]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Pairs activity Time: 15 mins Describe one physical activity or experience where you have used the outdoor area to support learning. Consider: An obstacle course A treasure hunt Bikes and trikes Bats and balls. What did the child learn? © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO3 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to provision for physical development for children from birth to 7 years [AC 3.2]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Strategies to promote physical development In order to promote physical development in children a practitioner needs to be aware of the stages of development. Practitioners should carry out observations to ensure that children are meeting the developmental milestones. It is then important to plan appropriate activities to develop both gross motor and fine motor skills. Children will need opportunities for stretch and challenge and should be supported to take managed risks. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO3 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to provision for physical development for children from birth to 7 years [AC 3.3]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Strategies to promote physical development A child who is reluctant to try a new physical activity should be gently encouraged and supported. They may be concerned about trying to walk along a balance beam, a practitioner should offer them support and then withdraw it as they grow in confidence. Developing fine motor skills will support children in many ways such as independence and self-help skills. A variety of fun and exciting activities should be provided to support all areas of physical development. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO3 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to provision for physical development for children from birth to 7 years [AC 3.3]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Classroom discussion activity Time: 15 mins Describe activities or experiences which support children’s fine motor skills. Consider: Everyday activities Stretch and challenge Giving children choices. How can a practitioner support children who do not want to sit down at an activity? © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO3 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to provision for physical development for children from birth to 7 years [AC 3.3]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Strategies to promote physical development Children should never be forced to take part in a physical activity. A child’s safety is paramount but practitioners will know the stage of development of each child and will be able to support the development of their physical skills. Some children may be ‘scared’ to try new things and the way a practitioner deals with this will affect a child’s confidence. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO3 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to provision for physical development for children from birth to 7 years [AC 3.3]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Reflection activity Time: 15 mins How do you support a child who says ‘I can’t’ when faced with a new physical activity? Consider: A child who feels inadequate because they cannot keep up when others are running around in the outdoor area A child who spent a long time carefully threading a long lace only for it to fall apart A child who refuses to put a foot on a climbing frame. How will your reaction affect the outcome? © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO3 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to provision for physical development for children from birth to 7 years [AC 3.3]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Extension activity Time: 15 mins Create a plan for an outdoor obstacle course for a group of 3–5 year olds. Consider: Age and stage of development Individual needs Teamwork Developing fine motor skills Stretch and challenge The role of the practitioner. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO3 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to provision for physical development for children from birth to 7 years [AC 3.1, 3.2, 3.3]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator In this lesson we have learnt that: Physical development includes fine motor and gross motor skills. Children are physically active from the moment they wake up. Some children will need to be encouraged to take time to develop their fine motor skills because they are always ‘busy’ and on the go. Children need to feel confident in their own abilities before they are willing to try new things. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator 1.Describe two everyday activities that will support fine motor skills. 2.Describe two indoor activities that will promote gross motor skills. 3.Name three things a child will learn from playing with large cardboard boxes. 4.Explain how to support a nervous child on a low balance beam. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited
