1. Read the title - what is the text about? Genre? Purpose? 2. Active reading – carefully read one paragraph at a time 4. Underline tricky words. Can you figure any of them out from the context? 3. Bullet Point the key words/ideas 5. Summarise the text Empowering Students: Improving Reading Skills High Five High Five is a close reading strategy, as opposed to skimming and scanning – which are also important reading skills!

1.Look at the title/composer- what could this tell you? 2. Look at the instrumentation- what ensemble is it written for? 4. Highlight any words/symbols you don’t recognise 3. Look at the first 8 bars and analyse the elements of music e.g. tempo/pitch 5. What do you think it will sound like? Music

1. Where is the resource from? Are they reliable and reputable? 2. Are they quoting primary or secondary data? 4. Highlight any difficult words and find out what they mean 3. Read each paragraph and list a maximum of 3 key words per paragraph 5. Summarise, including the difficult words you have just found out Physics

1) READ the question and look at the diagram: what topic is being tested? 2) UNDERLINE the important words, terms, operations and figures. 4) DO the Maths: carry out the operation and showing your working. 3) ESTIMATE the answer or bullet point the actions you will have to do. 5) CHECK your answer: have you answered the question?
