Warm Up On your way in, please grab a post-it note and sign our social contract up on the front board. Even if you don’t sign it, you are still held to those expectations! If you want to ADD something to the social contract, get another post-it note from me, write your suggestion on it, and stick it to the contract!

TE Quiz Write your name on your post-it and number down the side 1-4. On each of the next slides, there will be a question and 4 answer choices about selecting correct text evidence. Write your answer choice beside the appropriate number You may use your “Everyday Use” text, your stick figure, or your Short Answer Practice handout

SAR “Brain" The part of the SAR that comes directly from your brain is the ANSWER/RESPONSE/IDEA It usually restates the prompt in some way. It can be a metaphor or a simile, but you must be able to explain it! It usually - but not always - comes first in the SAR

SAR “Book” The part of the short answer response that comes from the “Book” or the text. Must have quotation marks around it You do not need to include line or page numbers Must be EMBEDDED Must be CORRECT You should have at least TWO pieces of text evidence. IF YOU CAN’T FIND TWO THAT SUPPORT YOUR ANSWER, YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR ANSWER!

Exit Ticket On the back of your post-it, please write down ONE question you have about SARs, characterization, or anything we have talked about since the first day

SAR “Upgrades” These are ways you can take a short answer response and upgrade them from a 2 (passing) to a 3 (AWESOME! ) – Use a simile or a metaphor – Make a real world connection – Use an idiom – Think about what DIDN’T happen in the text – Examine literary devices within the text
